More than 100 years after his assassination, President William McKinley is a political lightning rod in the Northern California city of Arcata. Progressives want a statue of McKinley removed from the town center...

Pairing McKinley with Mao Tse-Tung and Adolf Hitler, Schleyer accused the 25th president of being an imperialist who pushed the United States into the Spanish-American War, the Times-Standard of Eureka reported. He said thousands of Filipinos were killed on McKinley’s watch when they rebelled against U.S. rule...

“There’s very activist-oriented people in the community,” Councilman Pitino said. “Somewhere along the way (White House Deputy Chief of Staff) Karl Rove mentioned McKinley was his idol, and that kind of sealed the deal.”

Rove has applauded McKinley and has studied McKinley’s politics and his place in presidential history...

Are you a fellow Humboldtian? I'm in Blue Lake and work at HSU in Arcata. I've always gotten a kick out of the McKinley statue in the center of the Arcata plaza-- putting his statue there almost seems like an appropriate revenge of some sort....
