Controversies around Reed spooking fellow Republicans
Controversies around Reed spooking fellow Republicans
10/30/2005

Ralph Reed was anointed an instant front-runner last spring when he entered the race for lieutenant governor.

But recent polling numbers, likely driven by a barrage of media publicity detailing his lobbying activities, are stirring concerns among Republican insiders that the former Christian Coalition chairman-turned-lobbyist may bring more harm than good to next year's GOP ticket.
(snip)

But another poll conducted last month by Insider Advantage, also an Atlanta outfit, found that among all Georgians, Reed was viewed unfavorably by 19 percent and favorably by only 16 percent, with nearly two-thirds of the respondents undecided.

"I've never seen that before," said Matt Towery, chairman and CEO of Insider Advantage, who ran for lieutenant governor on the Republican ticket in 1990. "I've never seen a candidate with more unfavorables than favorables be in a race."
(snip/...)

2. What's strange about the numbers in that poll are

Almost everybody knows who Ralph Reed is. Like him or hate him he has been extremely visible for over a decade. Saying you're undecided about Ralph Reed is like saying you're undecided about Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson or Edward Kennedy.

Christian Coalition. The Abramoff-Indian-casino gambling scandal is just becoming more widely known. So many Republicans here simply vote a straight ticket and know little about the candidates.

I have Anti-Reed leaflets about the casino gambling scandal that I put on on cars with fish symbols. He is pure scum. Did you know that he lives in Duluth, home of both the runaway bride and the meth addicted lady who was held hostage by the Atlanta courthouse killer? Reed went to UGA when I was there. He had to resign from the student paper because of plagiarism charges.

4. There must be something strange in Duluth's water!
Interesting to learn he was charged with plagiarism in college. Seems as if he has been doing things the wrong way a long time!

Your leaflet idea is superb. How else are they going to find out? It certainly doesn't get discussed on ANY of the tv or radio news outlets. People who don't read are simply oblivious.

6. Exactly correct. It seems many Georgians don't know the little shit.
This is the fault of the MSP for not doing a better job of reporting all of the Reed links to major Repub scandals.

5. Dems figuring this out: can't win far right, so make them albatross
The Dems transparent and embarassing efforts to win over the religious right never shake a significant number of the nuts off the GOP tree, so a far better strategy is to leave them there and draw the attention of the majority who disagree with the far right to the GOP's obedience to them.

That's taking a risk.

But it worked with the Harriet Miers case, and you can't win a war by hiding in your trench and waiting for the other side to run out of bullets.
