Even as a boy Steven Smith loved to wear a uniform.

I remember my nephew as an 8-year-old blur on the soccer field, scoring goals in bunches and barely noticing all the scrapes and bruises. A few years later at Clark High, he lettered in football and track and competed in the state tournament in wrestling. He personified toughness without strutting like many of his pals.

His athletic pursuits didn't prevent him from keeping up his grades, joining the ROTC, playing in the school orchestra, and even performing in "Grease" as a senior.
