http://www.nydailynews.com/front/story/321405p-274595c.htmlMaybe it's the summer heat or maybe the White House got confused by the visit of Vietnam's prime minister yesterday. Whatever the cause, Team Bush suddenly seems determined to prove right those who say Iraq is another Vietnam.
Consider that Vice President Cheney gave a sunnyside up assessment of the war that included the ridiculous claim that the insurgency is "in its last throes." As hardly a day goes by without suicide bombers killing innocent Iraqis and with American troops still dying in large numbers - the total is now more than 1,700 - the comment was foolish.
It also reminded Americans of a certain age of the 5 o'clock follies. That was the daily press briefing during the Vietnam War where U.S. commanders assured reporters all was going well. To prove it, the military released the daily body count, a dubious set of stats supposedly showing we were killing so many Viet Cong that they were running out of fighters. You know how that ended.
Here's another Vietnam similarity: The frequent U.S. complaint that foreign fighters are crossing into Iraq through Syria.
Last time I checked, U.S. forces own the sky and have the most sophisticated satellite spying capability in the history of warfare. We also have drones, human intelligence and a quick-hit ability with everything from helicopter gunships to bombers.
