Media Myth

It seems to be on a downturn, but I still hear references to and about the infamous “Liberal” or “Left-wing” Media. And so I look and listen to those the epitome of ‘left wing’, ‘commie-loving’, ‘Al-Qaeda-kissing’ news channels.

And I heard a story; get this, about something called the ‘Downing Street Memo’.
And WOW! Let me tell you! I was shocked and appalled! I was horrified! This story was all over the place! I’m almost sick of hearing about it.

It’s all true! The media is so left wing that they didn’t think twice about putting out the story of how Pres. Bush and PM. Blair concocted the invasion of Iraq the year before the attack! I know, it sounds scary, but it’s true. Now I know you must be sick of hearing about this too, but here’s an excerpt;

“Bush wanted to remove Saddam, through military action, justified by the conjunction of terrorism and WMD. But the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy. The NSC had no patience with the UN route, and no enthusiasm for publishing material on the Iraqi regime's record. There was little discussion in Washington of the aftermath after military action.

The Foreign Secretary said he would discuss this with Colin Powell this week. It seemed clear that Bush had made up his mind to take military action, even if the timing was not yet decided. But the case was thin. Saddam was not threatening his neighbors, and his WMD capability was less than that of Libya, North Korea or Iran. We should work up a plan for an ultimatum to Saddam to allow back in the UN weapons inspectors. This would also help with the legal justification for the use of force.

WOW! Proof that The US administration had not only known that Iraq was not a real threat (As Cheney, Rice, and Powell all stated in early 2001), that Bush had no intention of avoiding war, and that ‘intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy’… Fixed! Finagled! Fabricated! Even Forged!

Wow, the left-wing Liberal Media strikes again!

What? You haven’t heard of the Downing Street Memo? I’ll tell you why; the ‘Liberal Media’ is a myth… it doesn’t exist. Otherwise you would have heard about the very real, very incriminating Downing Street memo.

2. Al Franken has stats which may help you

I watched the Conyers piece on c-span last week. I can not recall exact details at the moment but I did record the whole show. In it early on Al Franken listed off statistics which showed, (if I recall correctly), statistics relating to interviews and quotes by conservatives and liberals. My own sketchy memory recalls such stats as 8 to 1 for conservatives on "faux", and 3-1 for conservatives on c-span and numbers which favor conservatives for the rest of the media for all the other TV stations. I could re watch this program and get back to you with this data if you wish.

3. General advice:

1. Focus. Don't try to do too much. Quick and to the point is better.
2. The breathless, astounded "Wow!" tone probably won't work: consider serious, sober, somber.
3. There's usually no advantage to repeating memes that you don't want to reinforce: for example, if you don't want to reinforce the "liberal media" idea, then never ever use the phrase.
