Excerpts From Testimonies at Guantanamo (Guardian)
Monday May 30, 2005 7:31 PM

<snip> ``I kept telling him, no I didn't receive training. I was crying and finally I told him I did receive the training. My hands were tied behind my back and my knees were on the ground and my head was bleeding. I was in a lot of pain, so I said I had (military) training. At that point, with all my suffering, if he had asked me if I was Osama bin Laden, I would have said yes. What is my crime? Because of the United States, my hand is handicapped. I can't work. I can't do anything because of my hand. Am I an enemy of the United States?'' - One prisoner complaining he was allegedly abused and forced into confessing. <snip>

``My understanding (is) that since you captured me, you have to present some kind of proof for holding me but it looks like it's working out the other way around; I'm giving you the statements.'' - A prisoner complaining about the process. <snip>

``I don't think, at that time, the Americans were listening to anybody.'' - A prisoner insisting he was a district officer in the new Afghan government of President Hamid Karzai. <snip>

``In Afghanistan, all people are ready to accuse someone in passing and turn them over to the Americans.'' - A man insisting he was a tailor, not an associate of al-Qaida or the Taliban. <snip>
