Is George Bush a Liar?
IS GEORGE BUSH A LIAR?

By Peter Fredson

May 23, 2005

The American public has now had 4 years of what is loosely called “Bush Leadership.” According to most polls, about half of the nation thinks G.W.Bush is some kind of heroic or even saintly figure, and the other half thinks he is a shallow smirking strutting popinjay who is determined to destroy the democracy he found intact when he was given the Presidency by the Supreme Court.

Many people have charged that he has a firm propensity to misinform, deceive or even maliciously lie in order to gain some corporate goal advantage. Other people believe he talks to his God and therefore would not ever lie.

Perhaps asking some rhetorical questions might clarify the issue of whether Bush deliberately lies, makes simple but good-hearted mistakes, and is an innocent person who is deceived by bad people, or follows advice from his God.

Did Bush make war on Iraq in order to avenge an attempt on the life of his father?

Did Bush make war on Iraq because he showed that Iraq was involved in the 9/11 destruction of the Twin Towers and Pentagon?

2. real questions
Does George Bush -know- or -believe- that he's a liar? (Did he really know what he meant with the words culture of propaganda?) The guy's such a stupid ideologue and mean-spirited egophrenic that it looks to me as if he says things without really knowing or understanding the implications, dare I say it, the -nuance-. But he doesn't do nuance, remember.

and

Does Crawford have Bushes? lol

5. At some point, whether Bush lies, or is always honestly wrong
Edited on Fri May-27-05 07:11 AM by Inland
is a moot point. We can't afford either.

My favorite alternative is a third one: that Bush doesn't care enough about the truth to be a liar. If lying is intentionally telling a mistruth, Bush wanders through life saying things without ever wondering if it bears relationship with fact. Frankly, I doubt whether the issue of true or false comes up a lot at the WH. Useful, yes. Whether anyone will contest, yes. But true? Who says or not says something because it is or is not true, at the WH? Why would it even be discussed?

8. Great point / great observation.
I still believe in my heart that poor old Georgie believes the crap he says, and is probably surprised to hear that anyone, let alone over half the country, disagrees with him and disapproves of the job he is doing. But as you point out, he doesn't care enough about reality to worry about it too much; his world is one where everything has been handed to him on a silver platter, he wants for nothing, his many dismal business failures have still been profitable to him, and every idea and proposal he and his staff have generated come with wonderful and benefitial justifications. So what if reality looks nothing like the playbook; in Dubya's mind the playbook IS reality, and he has a host of advisers and assistants that continue to enforce that fantasy and shield him from the real world.

You're exactly right when you say the issue of true or false doesn't come up very often at the White House. They need not discuss it, because in their "Kingdom of Make-Believe" you only need to pretend something is true and it is.
