The Ostrich Approach
By Dan Froomkin
Special to washingtonpost.com
Wednesday, May 25, 2005; 2:15 PM

Confronted by serious political opposition at many turns, President Bush has come up with an across-the-board public response: Don't acknowledge any of it.

<snip>
Can the strategy of denial work? Perhaps. Bush has done well in the past by defining his own reality and setting his own agenda, rather than letting others do so.

Or, as he put it in a revealing ad-lib yesterday while talking about Social Security: "See, in my line of work you got to keep repeating things over and over and over again for the truth to sink in, to kind of catapult the propaganda."

on edit:

yes, i know it's an opinion piece. here it is as a full transcript of the speech, as a news release:

10. I Think It's Stopped Working
Enough people are getting fed up to loudly proclaim the truth. I just wonder how bad it has to get militarily for the troops to do some effective lobbying.

2. It seems strange to see the words bush** and reality in the same sentence.
It's not a connection I would ever make.

3. IMO, that is where Kerry failed, he never acknowledged any
allegations by the reich wing.
This could be a good thing. The sheep all need something to talk about and if the regime isn't acknowledging anything, then they won't have talking points and the sheep will all have to think.
And thinking leads to realizations that they have been duped.

Just a thought!

5. This dimwitt must have gotten that phrase from..
Rove. It is not concievable that he thought of this on his own. He has revealed what we knew all along though. He is nothing but a slimy, arrogant, propogandist.

8. The "Rest of the World" is not interested in The "Bush Gang"!
coming back to reality! That will never happen! What were really worried about is the General American Population coming to terms with reality! The "average Joe/Jane" reality! At the moment that still has not happened? How much punishment can the American "average Joe/Jane" take before they decide that there "REALLY" is something "SINISTER" going on in America! A stockmarket crash!!!! 3,000 US troops killed in the "War on Terror and 20,000 Wounded? What is it going to take??????

11. what it's going to take..
.. is r e a l suffering with a direct link to its cause, Bushco.

Nobody at the top is suffering, including the media. Bush and his admin control the message and all three branches of government. There are no checks and balances there.

The only hope for democracy lies with the people, who have to organize and protest and strike in a big way..

.. like they do in other countries.

12. Absolutely correct.
Meltdown is happening now and history will repeat similar circumstance of 1928. We will eventually meet the same economic conditions of Argentina who overextended themselves in wars of conquest in the 1980's and crashed in the late 1990's.

I wonder though if there will be any need for strikes as employment dries up.

15. What's that Nazi quote?
I can't remember it exactly or find it right now, but it's something along the line of keeping the message simple and just repeating it over and over.

Does anyone have that one handy?

17. Yes, close.
But not quite the one. The one I'm looking for specifically talks about repetition.

But thanks!

18. There's this
"Not every item of news should be published. Rather must those who control news policies endeavor to make every item of news serve a certain purpose." Goebbels

or this: "All propaganda must be so popular and on such an intellectual level, that even the most stupid of those toward whom it is directed will understand it... Through clever and constant application of propaganda, people can be made to see paradise as hell, and also the other way around, to consider the most wretched sort of life as paradise." Hitler

Is it one of those?

19. Very, very close.
Maybe it was something that was part of the surrounding context for one of those quotes.

I hate it when stuff is right there, glimmering in the back of my mind, and I simply can't fish it all the way out. It'll come to me at a most unexpected time and place, as usual....

20. I thought maybe the
"Through clever and constant application of propaganda, people can be made to see paradise as hell" part might be what you might be thinking of. Oh well. best I could do.

21. I appreciate your efforts.
Thanks!

Maybe it wasn't even one of the Nazis who said it and I could be way off base on the source. At this point, I'm just waiting for it to pop to the surface -- which it will... eventually.

22. here's one - but there's another SOMEWHERE...
“...the rank and file are usually much more primitive than we imagine. Propaganda must therefore always be essentially simple and repetitious.

“The most brilliant propagandist technique will yield no success unless one fundamental principle is borne in mind constantly... it must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over.”

— Joseph Goebbels
Nazi Propaganda Minister

23. This one?
Edited on Fri May-27-05 08:20 PM by mzteris
"If you repeat a lie often enough, it will be accepted as truth."

or

"Never admit a lie - simply keep repeating it."

Above: Joseph Goebbels

Below: H. Goering

The great masses of the people... will more easily fall victims to a great lie than to a small one.

Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it, and eventually they will believe it.

24. Yes!
All of the above! No wonder I couldn't put my finger on it -- because there are several that are variations on the theme.

Hitler himself apparently wrote a whole book on the subject: http://www.tamilnation.org/media/goebbels.htm
