Midwesterners: Economy Top U.S. Problem

By WILL LESTER, Associated Press Writer
Tue May 3, 3:42 PM ET

<snip>

When asked in an open-ended question to name the most important problem facing the United States, people in the nation's heartland were very likely to mention the economy and jobs.

"If people don't have jobs, the engine doesn't run," said Patricia Astrup, a ceramic artist from Minneapolis, explaining why the economy is her biggest concern. "I think outsourcing has really done some damage."

<snip>

In contrast, people in the West were far more likely to be concerned about war generally. Three in 10 Westerners named that as the top issue, twice the number in the South and Midwest.

<snip>

Southerners and Northeasterners were more likely to be worried about a cross-section of issues — with war and the economy still playing a big role along with numerous domestic issues like morality, energy and political leadership. But neither the war nor the economy dominated in either of those regions.

Differences were not confined to varied regions of the nation.

1. We should be able to win back the Senate and the House
I think Howard Dean has the fund raising ability and balls to tell the Democrats that they need to run attack ads on the Bush economy for 2006.

2. The number and frequency...
Of stories out of Washington, regarding fear and loathing on the part of repuke congresscritters seems to be growing. Not to flood stage at this point, but at the end of the elections, you would have thought that civilization had undergone some mystical paradigm shift.

What makes it all remarkable is how short a span of time it took for the whole complexion of things to shift. The repukes have some real, substantive and serious problems with the public's perceptions. These perceptions will not be as easy to get rid of as they were to create, for they ripped off the mask for all to see what lies underneath, and it ain't compelling for a hell of a lot of people.

Now, some people are complaining that the dems have not started punching real hard, have not revealed how they would be different. Why should they? Why should they show a card, much less a hand now.

Now is the time for some tactics and to develop a strategy for 2006 and beyond. Let the repukes bleed themselves. They are doing a fine job of it.
