Small town America begins to see... albeit in Oregon
Edited on Tue Apr-19-05 10:39 AM by No Mandate Here.
This is an editorial by the editor/ publisher of the McMinnville News register, which was referred to me by my 82 year old Mom. A bit of background... Mom is an Eisenhower Republican (when they stood for something other than corporatocracy and greed). My sister and I helped her see last November, and she voted for a Dem for the first time ever (as far as we know...)

So, here is a column from a week or so ago...

Issues compete for our attention

Published: April 9, 2005

Whatchamacolumn
By Jeb Bladine

The nation's focus is riveted on Social Security reform instead of the more immediate need of reform and reduction of health care costs; we focus on abortion, assisted suicide and sexual preference when the great issue of the day should be a search for energy independence that protects the global environment.

Sometimes, it almost seems like a variation of the "Big Lie."

The "Big Lie Theory," often misattributed to Joseph Goebbels, stems from a passage in "Mein Kampf" by Adolf Hitler (James Murphy translation): " ... in the big lie there is always a certain force of credibility; because the broad masses ... more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods. It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously."

<snip>

Social Security no doubt needs attention to its tax rates, rules of eligibility and payment formulas. But the financial impact of needed changes over many decades is about what health care costs hikes have been over the past 48 months. Historians will wonder why this president spent so much "political capital" on Social Security rather than health care reform.

Perhaps this is a beginning of an awakening to the evils of corporate media?

Wouldn't it be nice?

1. Fascinating how everyone is suddenly talking about Ike
when they ignored Clark during the 2004 primaries. It shows you that a Clark/Graham ticket probably would have won.

2. I use the term to signify a time

when the Republican party stood for smaller government and fiscal responsibility, which they most certainly do not now.

Those who receive the majority of their information from corporate media still think this way, unfortunately. Mom still doesn't understand how I cannot watch any TV news. The big lie is insidious.

I do think Clark would have done well. They certainly wouldn't have used the Slime boat vets, would they?

3. Oh, they probably would have. Clark would not have won for the
same reason Kerry did not...the pugs stole the election again. Unless we mandate paper ballots, the dems will never win again. We must get the dems back in local and state power so it is harder to cheat and steal the election. Clark is super; he went through the roof when the a-- at fox tried to accuse him of not supporting the troops. I hope all of you got a chance to see that exchange. i think of it often just to cheer myself up.
