James Wolcott: TIME Shampoos Attack Poodle (Annthrax Coulter)
It's not worth wasting any more outrage on the subject of Ann Coulter. We all know what she is, and can hear in the brief quiets between her brash pronouncements the squeal and squeak of mice running wild in the messy hayloft of her mind. She's an empty uproar with long legs and long shiny hair and a reputation for extending the cocktail hour indefinitely that casts her with what Paddy Chayevsky emphemistically "an aura of availability." Middle-aged men and younger can daydream that if they met her under under auspicious circs, as they say in Bertie Wooster novels, they might have a shot, a reverie harder to entertain about Wonkette, whose wedding ring is powered with a special wolf-repellent ray. Coulter may have female fans, I wouldn't know, but her media stardom is primarily a male fantasy that is both sexist and racist. She is the pinup pundit of White Prerogative, her arrogant vanity perfect for a country and a media-political culture that refuse to recognize its postindustrial decline and decay. A country that still thinks it can whip the world into obeying its will.

But as I say, she is what is synthetically is, and is unlikely to change or deepen. Why should she, when mocking a Max Cleland or spouting anti-Muslim hate brings her such reward?

No, it's the editors of Time who should hide and hang their heads as they perp-walk from corporate HQ to a rented bus. They should go off on a corporate retreat and stay there. Just not come back. Let the junior staffers and interns and messengers put out the magazine--it would probably be an improvement, and even if it weren't, the end-result probably wouldn't gleam with jaded calculation. It might have a smidgen of honest conviction.

4. I would love to comply with your request Zidzi
but I dropped my subscription to TIME years ago. Of course, if I still did subscribe, I would not be after that nauseating love letter to a "woman" that advocates blowing up fellow journalists (if one can even caller Annthrax a journalist), as in her quote about how Timothy McVeigh should have blown up the NYTimes building instead of the Murrow building. I even make it a point not to visit there website anymore either.

6. Yeah, Dudley, I dropped my
subscription to Time..three years ago. But there must still be a lot of people out there who take it and it would be so gratifying and good for our Country's health if they would all drop the metaphoric bomb on Time.

Coltface is probably the ultimate embodiment of womanhood for these freepers. Besides being blond, skinny, and (in their minds) classy, she's committed to wingdingery, in other words a hard broad who doesn't look like a hard broad or the traditional Schaffly uptight stiffneck. I'm sure with someone like her they wouldn't have to feel guilty for being such an ideological prick, they wouldn't have to muster up a sensitive side to impress her because she's just as compassionless as they are.

Of course this is just an off-the-cuff theory...

Isn't this typical of the freeper mind, particularly the blue collar ones? They feel that through their hard work and self-confidence (CUE DREAMY HARP MUSIC) they'll, sooner than they know it, join that billionaire boys club and rub elbows with the likes of Hannity and Limbaugh, enjoying whisky and cigars on Bill Buckley's yacht, and fighting off "babes" like Coltface, Ing-rat, and Malkintent... (DREAMY HARP MUSIC ABRUPTLY ENDS)

"Yeah, I wanna get a fill-up on pump 9... and a pack of Newport Lights-how much are the beef sticks?"

3. Let the rest of the world find out she has mental illness.
The more people pay attention to her in order to find out what the hype is all about the more that she'll be revealed for the skank she is. At least Rush Limbaugh didn't openly call for the murder of liberals to set an example.

11. True. Rush instead said, "Don't kill ALL the liberals," explaining ...
... that a few should be spared for public display: it sounded rather reminiscent of the Nazis' "Museum of Vanished Races," which they planned to build after completing their "Final Solution."

7. At my parents' house this weekend
they still have a subscription to Time. I was horrified just seeing her in the "100 Most Influential" issue. Interestingly, she was in the section on "Entertainers". (That must have really cheesed her off, since she considers herself a serious thinker.) But that's nothing compared to the horror of putting her on the cover. The cover! Good god, what are they thinking! The sad thing is, she was on the wane. She'd been fired from MSNBC, fired from her weekly column, her outrageous behavior finally consigning her to the oblivion she so richly deserves......only to be resurrected by Time.

BTW, James Wolcott, what a writer!

9. NY Daily News tore her a new one today. . .

(snip)
Human Uzi Ann Coulter is on the cover of this week's Time magazine, and author John Cloud's profile of "Ms. Right" is largely sympathetic.
But yesterday, the best-selling conservative firebrand had blood in her eyes and venom on her tongue over cover photographer Platon's off-putting wideangle-lens portrait.

"Kim Jong Il was treated better," Coulter raged in an E-mail. "A CURVED-LENS PHOTO ON THE COVER? Just amazing. My feet are the size of the Atlantic Ocean and my head the size of a pea."

Time executive editor Priscilla Painton replied: "There are a lot of women who would kill for those legs."
(snip)

:rofl::rofl::rofl:

14. Heh. Aura of availability...
Did Wolcott just call Coulter a slut? It's not true! Well, OK, it is true. David Brock told a lovely tale about her in Blinded by the Right, drunk and crawling around a party on all fours. What a classy lady!

For those into self-flagelation, try, if you will, imagining the hideous coupling of Annthrax and Bill Maher. The Playboy Mansion Sad-Cat and the Rightwing Hose-Hound.

Blech. :puke:

15. My e-mail to Time Magazine
Editors:

I would like to commend Time Magazine on the recent hiring of Lizzie Grubman as News Editor. Putting Ann Coulter on the cover of your fine magazine is a brave first move by Ms. Grubman.

I look forward to seeing more cover stories and interviews of personalities like Sean "Puffy" Combs, Taylor Dayne, Tommy Mottola and Britney Spears.

News may be dead, but PR is forever.

Way to go Time Magazine!
