All Canadians could face Arar's plight
Report: Law allows U.S. to deport anyone to a third country, not just dual citizens

The Ottawa Citizen
April 3, 2005

All Canadian citizens -- not just dual nationals like Maher Arar -- are vulnerable to the secretive American practice of "rendition," whereby people who are suspected security risks can be deported to third countries known for torture, government records reveal.

Internal Department of Foreign Affairs documents state that, while the wishes of deportees are normally taken into account when deciding where to send them, "in the U.S. system, security related 'rendition' seems to operate under different rules."

Officials warn that "a person possessing only Canadian citizenship could be involuntarily removed to a third country under U.S. law through rendition."

Paragraphs immediately following that sentence are censored, and Foreign Affairs didn't return a request for comment. <snip>

1. Perhaps The Headline Should Read "All North Americans"
The background documents relate to a deal reached last year between Prime Minister Paul Martin and U.S. President George W. Bush that requires high-level notification if one country intends to deport the citizen of another to a third country.

2. I would say that if rendition is part of the Patriot Act... Canadians have
to wait until the Patriot Act is over with before we get any closer. Get your house (****) in order America. Then we can talk about new policy.

4. What ever happed to sovereignty? You will be crushed in the
name of security.

If your government declines to protest in every international, political and business forum, your national identity will be lost. The only remaining question is will Canada be a state or a protectorate?

You folks better wake up before it is too late.
