Chuck Hagel to propose raising retirement age
By NEDRA PICKLER
Associated Press Writer

Mar 6, 9:38 PM EST

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A leading Republican senator is proposing to raise the Social Security retirement age from 67 to 68, while Democrats maintain their opposition to the president's plan to overhaul the retirement program with private investment accounts.

Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel's plan would raise the age that retirees could receive full benefits, beginning in 2023. "We are living longer," Hagel said Sunday on CBS' "Face the Nation." "So when you look at the total universe of this, I think that makes some sense to extend the age."

But some leading Democrats said they could not support Hagel's plan because he would pay for private accounts by borrowing and increasing the nation's deficit. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., told ABC's "This Week" that would be "a great threat to seniors" because it would raise interest rates.

...it'll screw us.

Repukes have been enjoying the benefits of SS-- right along with the Dems-- since 1935. Yet they act as if it's been a scourge on their lives. What the hell is their problem?????

2. Well, that's easy for Chuck, he's a f'ing multi millionaire...
And he owns or used to own a major interest in a voting machine company. Man, this guy is a smiley face version of Bush; "Oh, I'm a liberal, easy going guy, so when I screw you to the wall, well, golly, it won't feel bad because I'm a liberal, easy going guy..." Thanks Nebrasks for two lousy Senators...I should talk, I'm in VA.

9. Life span is an issue, like it or not.
When S.S. was first started in the 1930's, the average life span was 63. Today it is at least 76 depending on the source. This is an issue that needs to be addressed because it is not going away. Keep in mind that S.S. is an insurance program and not a retirement program.

And IMHO, retirement accounts are perfectly fine as long as they are separate from social security. Making contributions to a retirement account easy for all workers is not such a bad idea. But to make it mandatory isn't the best way to go, and using social security money to fund them is a recipe for disaster.

10. The truth of the matter is.............
Republicans would do away with Social Security tomorrow if they thought they could get away with it. Bush seems intent on turning Social Security into a Govt. sponsored 401K plan that will only benefit Wall Street. The fact is that Bush has not proposed any way of saving Social Security. Yet, the brain dead red staters, conservative "evangelicals", Faux News morons and Ditto Twerps all think Bush's plan is wonderful.
