Berlin: Techno fans flock to annual Love Parade

BERLIN, Germany (AP) -- Organizers of Berlin's Love Parade said Friday they expect between a half-million and 800,000 techno fans to jam the capital's Tiergarten park this weekend, dancing alongside 30 floats carrying bands and disc jockeys.

Some 3,000 police officers and 1,000 first-aid personnel are being deployed to patrol the annual techno party Saturday -- this year under the banner "Love Rules."

The parade began in 1989 as a small procession of 150 ravers, and has since developed into a Berlin institution and a massive draw for partiers and curious tourists -- peaking in 1999, when a record 1.5 million turned out.

This year, organizers have teamed up with the German Red Cross in a charity drive that will see part of the proceeds from Love Parade souvenirs go toward the construction of two rehabilitation centers in Iraq for civilians hurt by mines and in recent fighting.
