Cops Taking 5th Amendment in Chicago Police Torture Lawsuit
http://ap.tbo.com/ap/breaking/MGBNQ8YXM1E.html

CHICAGO (AP) - More than two dozen current and former police officials and homicide detectives have taken the 5th Amendment when questioned in a civil lawsuit alleging that Chicago police used torture when interrogating suspects, attorneys said Tuesday.

Attorneys for two former death row inmates told U.S. Magistrate Judge Geraldine Soat Brown that the former detectives and officials have refused to testify because they are covering up the use of torture by police. snip

The two former prisoners say Burge and detectives under him tortured them into confessing to murders they didn't commit. Both men were among four death row inmates pardoned by former Gov. George Ryan just before he left office.

Attorneys for Burge, who was fired by the police department following an internal investigation, have denied he was ever involved in torture. But inmates say they were beaten, dunked in water and questioned with a plastic typewriter cover over their heads, among other things. Taylor says electric shock devices may have been used.

1. Bastards
Don't know what's worse: the many people who sat on Death Row for years because of these sick fucks, or the fact that none of them -- the prosecutors who condoned this behavior, their supervisors who ignored it, or the sadists themselves -- will ever see the inside of a jail cell, or even get a slap on the wrist.

2. Don't forget about the real murderers who are still walking the streets
While these scum-suckers were torturing innocent people into confessing to murders they didn't commit, the real perps were out and about killing someone else. Nice, huh?

14. Indeed
But you know, having to go out and find the real criminals would have taken all the fun out of their jobs, you know? I saw we attach them to a car battery and watch 'em light up until they sing like canaries.

3. Police Officers Invoking The 5th Should Be Fired Without Any Benefits
These are public servants. They certainly have the right to invoke the 5th, but if they do -- as they have -- they should be immediately fired with no pension or medical coverage or any other benefits paid for by the public.

8. Remember this part of it?
From April of this year:

(snip)

In a sworn videotaped statement, the sister of a former police detective, Ellen Pryweller, said that Burge and her brother bragged about beating and torturing murder suspects:

”That they beat the (profanity) out of them. That they throw them against walls...they burn them...smothered them poke them do something to some guys testicles.”

(snip)

More about Pryweller's statement:

I seem to recall that the police set out right away to make her look like a kook and a drunk. Might have seen it in the Reader. I've heard nothing more about her side of it, or the Burge case, till your post.

He's living happy in Florida. His family loves and defends him. The cops he worked with still love him too. He'll probably never do time.

10. Burge was the worst. Not only an abuser, but a snitch for criminals
and the Chicago mob. WHILE he was working on the other side of the street for the FBI!

15. I was afraid you were going to say that
"WHILE he was working on the other side of the street for the FBI!"

You don't suppose our system is rotting from within?

No accountability, just crank up the with/against rhetoric and demand full goose-stepping compliance.

11. Now ask why some behave like this
The L.A. Sheriff dept. has it's problems again, not as bad,but bad enough.A fresh L.A. police officer is sent to the 77th precint to work first off,the sheriffs go to work at county for 2 years. When you get out of these places all you have seen is the underside and then everyone who is not a cop is what they call a shit bird.
They are bread toward seeing the bad and there is racism in the forces amoungst the force that is worse than on the street.
We (not us) have created some monsters, not a huge percent, but a big enough amount to be concerned, then put them in cars instead of the streets to widen the gap between them and the world. Here in the L.A. area all the cops have to live far away from where they work and this again widens the gap.The right wing loves reationary police forces and have helped to create them with staggering real estate rates, less benifits, less pay, more work.Zillions of minimum wage private cops in gated communitys and the low and high economy where middle ground is shrinking everyday. This is another lie tactic, the wingers love the police and we don't.The wingers treat them like shit and the normal people get the cops distrust. One of the many things we have to fix, they are the ones that have to deal with assault rifles and a population that can buy a gun for less than a bag of food. They are pissed, scared and under paid just like the neocons want them.Being a liberal i have always tryed to make them feel that we are the least of thier problems, sometimes met with unfounded hatred ,it hurts but if you can make one cop realize that the democrats are thier friends it helps.
