Vietnam detonates 'monster' bomb

A retrospective look at the results of past "strong leadership".

Hanoi - Vietnam's defence ministry said on Monday that it had detonated the biggest bomb found so far since the war with the United States ended in 1975.

The 5,5-ton bomb was detonated on Sunday by experts of the ministry's Centre for Bomb and Landmine Clearance, an official at the centre said.

The command said that 3,5 tons of explosives had been safely removed from the shell before it was detonated.

According to the US military, more than 15 million tons of bombs, mines, artillery shells and other kinds of munitions were used during the Vietnam War.
