Miguel Estrada withdraws name for court nomination (Breaking CNN)
NO further details except that he has written the White House and withdrawn his name from nomination saying this has all been too hard on his family.

3. Poor thing!
It wasn't too hard when he was busy being the kind of judge he is to deserve all those votes against him.

it's amazing how many people just seem to "fall on the sword". I'm sure someone in the WH had a hand in his "decision".

22. Great Yahoo story! They really worked it-

Poor, unloved Estrada, awwww, poor thing.

Last spun sentence of the article:
(snip) Republicans accused Democrats of treating Estrada unfairly because he is a conservative Hispanic. (snip/...)

Thanks for the link, Cadfael. :bounce:

8. No, this is orchastrated
This is orchastrated to get him in the news, the embattled Republican Latino, in order to influence outcome in the CA election. Bush will 'talk' with him, and he will continue the fight...

10. we haven't seen the last of him
He'll been very active in the Re-Election campaign as a wedge issue between Dems and Hispanics. This is far from over; in fact, we'll be seeing more of him than ever. It's called hardball.

11. In the Meantime, Wooo-Hooo! Dan COULTER's His Hag
The Faux dude ASNER couldn't put "Hispanic" ENOUGH times in this stumbler of a sentence:

"ESTRADA is the Harvard educated Hispanic, Honduran, from Honduras, Hispanic."-----------swear to Zeus!

Anyway, all hail, SCHUMER, LEAHY, the Hispanic Caucus, the Professor, Mary Ann, and the rest!

12. Limbaugh should be interesting today
His spin on this has always been the "hypocrisy" of the liberals. It goes something like this:

Estrada is Hispanic therefore the Liberals should be 100% behind him because Libs are always yapping about inclusion. The dems are against Estrada so they're hypocrits!

Expect to see this played out over and over and over again during the 2004 campaign.

13. It won't matter that much
if Republicans try and use that argument. All that Democrats will have to do is point to Prop 187.

14. You're right...
and this was probably the purpose of the entire charade. Surely, BushCo. must have known this nomination would go down in flames. It must certainly have been put up to create a very large wedge issue that the Rethugs could cram down Dems' throats during the height of the campaign. Interesting this occurs just when the 2004 campaign is officially launched.

Creepin' jackbooted dregs of society... (oh, I'm referring to Republicans in case you didn't know).

15. Yes, It's the Racist Conundrum
Voting Hispanics ain't that dumb, know SELL-OUTS when they see'em.

But the wingnuts are tied up in knots: They picked somebody based on RACE, then accuse the opposition of being racist for rejecting him on IDEOLOGICAL grounds. Hahaha. They are fools to stand in front of Hispanics and do the Orrin HATCH-righteous thing when HISPANICS were against the dude. Hahahahaha.

24. Faux Is Flogging the Story HARD, All Morning
Casting it as lessening "the Latino vote" for the Dems. They are SO blind. They keep appealing to RACISM, that people should vote FOR somebody based on RACE as opposed to IDEOLOGY.

25. Sheesh, it's about time
How many cloture votes did they have on that filibuster? It was like one a week since the filibuster was first broken out.

This is the kind of relentless pressure we could stand to see more of, at other times and places.

27. Hopefully the Dems will point to the 7-8 OTHER Hispanic judges...
who are still waiting for a floor vote. The other hispanic judges received FULL judicial committee support and yet Frist is slowly taking his time to bring these names to the floor.

This is the real hypocrisy with hispanics. We need to make sure the public is aware of this issue!!!

32. Just Goes to show..
That the Dems CAN WIN!

If they want to.

I'm glad the dems stuck to their guns. They need to be firm with this President. There is no benefit in conceding anything to the conservatives.

The conservatives only care about gaining control of power and weilding it, they have no moral ethics in how they achieve those ends.

The Dems have to fight, fight, fight.

33. The Democrats just weren’t going to treat this man like Thomas.
Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice… The Republicans honestly thought the high tech lynching maneuver would work again. Once the claim was made that the opposition was about Estrada’s Latino heritage the Democrats were supposed to act the fools they did in the Thomas nomination. It actually surprised me that the Democrats didn’t fall for it again, maybe they did learn something.
