Three Senators Consider Bids for Governor
In a sign of growing Democratic powerlessness and despair in Washington after Tuesday's elections, Senator Christopher J. Dodd is considering running for governor of Connecticut in 2006, fellow lawmakers and an adviser to the senator said yesterday.
...
The other two, Senator Jon Corzine of New Jersey and Senator Charles E. Schumer of New York, are said to be dispirited over their continued minority status - as well as the reality that their party does not appear to have a shot at winning the majority any time soon.

Mr. Dodd, Mr. Schumer and Mr. Corzine are highly ambitious men. Their potential departure from the Hill underscores how impotent Democrats now feel in Washington.

"People are just giving up," said one Democratic strategist who has been a key adviser to Senate and House candidates from the New York region. "They're realizing that they may be able to accomplish a lot more from a governor's mansion than from Capitol Hill."

5. some states? which states?
Democrats will never be in majority again unless they start winning senate races in the south.

The numbers just don't add up. The truth is ever state has 2 senators. California has 2 senators and Alamaba has 2 senators.

Democrats are being completely shut out of the south. How can we have a majority in the senate again?

Either Democrats start winning in the south or they defeat all the republican senators in the north and midewest. GOP has 2 senators in PA, Maine, NH. GOP has 1 senator in MN and OR... I might be missing some other GOP seats but none of these northern and midwestern seats should be republican.

13. In our defense, our Senator was killed in a plane crash
mere days before the election. Paul Wellstone would have crushed rubber stamp Coleman...

Funny how these things keep happening to Democratic senators...

2. they may just be playing into bush's hands by leaving the Senate without a
voice of opposition ... and handing it over to a zero conscience-filled republican body ... even if they do not have enough votes to stop the republican onslaught they can be the pulse and conscience of our senatorial body... and maybe (HOPE AGAINST HOPE)the fundies' pockets, (so many of them are so dirt poor or are living from pay check to pay check like the rest of most of America) that they will have gotten tired of all their hullabaloo crap and may have moved to the side of voting for senators who stand for real food on the table, medicine in the medicine cabinets, dollars in retirement pockets, issues.

4. Not about the election
I don't know about Dodd. But Corzine and Schumber were thinking of running before the election.

6. Sitting Senators are unlikely to be elected President.
John Kennedy was the last.

I can see younger Senators leaving in frustration for a Governorship, with eyes on a return to Washington as President.

8. Methinks John Edwards might have this in mind.
He's still relatively young (in his 50s)

9. And what pisses me off is

The North is only 3 moderate Republican Senators away (Chafee, Snowe, Collins) from being "shut out" for Republicans.

That is IT folks. they got the South, we got the North. Only difference? The folks in the North are not so goddamn beholden to party ID they will vote for a Rep (Chafee) if they think he is a good man (which he is).

In the South, quality MODERATE DEMOCRATS (moderates folks, these are not gay lovers here)...Moderate Dems are beaten by mentally ill Republicans (Bunning) or complete loose-cannon nut jobs (DeMint).

I don't believe this South bullshit as much as the next guy. Let's do what the Reps did...Lets go after the Moderate Republicans in Democratic states. Thats what they did in Republican states.

Lets make a run at Chafee, Snowe and Collins. Lets try to get them to join up with us and then find an ass kicker that can beat them if they don't join.

Then the freaking press will be wondering, "Why can't the republicans win in the north?"

Why do we have to suck South dick when the North is almost as solidly Democratic.

10. The North is not solidly Democratic
Pennsylvania is a swing state. The Governor, State Treasurer, and State Auditor General are Democrats. The State Attorney General and both U. S. Senators are Republicans. One of those Senators is a favorite here at DU, Rick Santorum. And Republicans just added to their majorities in both houses of the state legislature on Tuesday.

11. I think it is very important to rebuild at the state level
I think we may be cooked at the federal level for the time being. If the Fundies try to pass insane abortion/gay laws at the state level, we're going to need Democratic Governors to veto all the shit that comes down the pike.

12. I dont

Consider PA North anymore than I consider Maryland South.

Maryland is South of the MD Line.

I live in Virginia, in the wing nut areas and I am a stones throw from Pennsylvania.
