13,000 Ballots Rushed From Voting Site, Must Be Recounted
Memory Card On Optical Scan Machine Fails
UPDATED: 3:37 pm EST November 1, 2004

About 13,000 ballots were removed from an early-voting site in Daytona Beach, Fla., Monday and rushed to a secure vault in Deland after an optical scan machine failed, according to Local 6 News.

Local 6 News has learned that a memory card, on the machine failed and all 13,000 votes must be recounted. A computer error is to blame for the failure of the memory card which records the voting data, Local 6 News reported.

When the error was discovered Monday, representatives from both parties were notified. Both sides then witnessed the removal of the ballots and their storage in the vault. The canvassing board will meet Monday to discuss how to recount the ballots.

1. I don't guess there'll be a "hanging chad" issue....
...then again, the GOPers can always claim the ballots were not clearly marked.

5. "Glenda Hood and Teresa LePore are reportedly in the vault with the
memory card, along with with several computer experts from Diebold and the RNC who said they would have the vote count fixed shortly."

Sadly, this is probably not far from the truth.

20. Nothing like this could ever happen with simple paper and pen balloting.
Electronic Voting Machines are nothing but flawed calculators manufactured by republican owned corporations and purchased, endorsed, and employed by members of the republican party, almost exclusively, in order to change vote counts and fix elections so that republicans appear to win.

That's it. There is no other logical reason for using electronic voting machines. None. They are a full-blown threat to our democracy.

Are you serious?? Voter fraud was just as bad before, it was just that the media didn't play such an intense watchdog role. Party bosses in the 1920's stuffed ballot boxes all they wanted, entire ballot boxes from specific precincts were thrown away in the 50's, and so on. It always happens, all we can do is try to monitor it.

33. Quite serious. You can alter thousands of votes in a
matter of seconds with electronic voting devices, and no one can prove you did it because their is no tangible evidence. you can monitor paper balloting, but you cannot effectively monitor electronic balloting.

And paper ballots can be recounted.

There is no reasonable comparison between the verifiability of paper ballots and electronic balloting. Electronic voting machines are ridiculous.

You must hold similar suspicions of ATMs, then?

For the rest of us, highly accurate digital counting is a pleasant fact of life. And it can be applied to voting, too. The problem is the politicization of the technology, its control by partisans. Solve that problem, and it is a trifle to create a paper trail.

In short: as throughout the checkered history of US electioneering, the problem is people, not technology.

7. If the BALLOTS were removed that means it must have been optical scan.
I don't quite understand why there's a question about how to recount. Wouldn't you just replace the memory card, or use another machine, and just rescan the damn ballots?

24. This is the safest kind of error
They just opened a machine, about the size of a washer if it's like the optical scans in my district, and removed all the paper ballots. I'd trust the hand count over the optical scan anyway! -though the totes still travel over a modem a couple of times.

35. That's my (mis)county, screwing up the count again!
At least with optical scan, ballots, they can do a recount by hand if necessary. If this was in a touch screen county of FL, sorry but no way to recover those votes. How much clearer does the necessity for a paper ballot need to be?

36. Dem counties don't have optical scan
My paranoid mind thinks it's very telling that the major Dem counties are the ones with the Touch Screens where there's no paper trail whatsoever. The Repug counties have optical scans.

Think there might be a reason for this??

37. Why this is a *good thing*!
Optical scanner voting is counted just like the standardized tests we were all submitted to in school.

What is important is: there is a paper ballot, and it can be recounted, even as the optical scanner catches overvotes and other errors (rejecting the ballot back to the voter, who--in North DAkota at least--can replace the spoiled ballot with a new one0.

This is why a paper ballot must be maintained!

39. I agree with you!
I'm in Florida and in my area it's all touch-screen. I would *much* rather have optical scan! The main thing that most of us here are worried about is that there is no means to recount with touch-screens.
