Texas: Democratic senator returning home
http://www.dallasnews.com/latestnews/stories/090203dntexredist.c58.html

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – In a sign the Democrats’ boycott over a new congressional map may be weakening, a state senator said Tuesday he’s probably returning to Texas, although he promised to discuss strategy one more time with 10 colleagues before making a final decision.

“I’m going home,” said Sen. John Whitmire, D-Houston, carrying his bags as he arrived back at the Democrats’ hotel in Albuquerque after spending Labor Day weekend in Houston.

“I just don’t understand the rationale of staying in New Mexico when we’re not in session,” he said.

1. It's too bad, but someone has to be first to fold...
“I just don’t understand the rationale of staying in New Mexico when we’re not in session,” he said.

I believe the rationale is that if he returns, the Republicans will have him arrested and will immediately call another special session which he will be forced to attend, thus ending the redistricting fight and allowing the new plan to be enacted.

I feel sorry for this guy, he is in an extremely hard position - being seperated from family and friends, miles from home - but he has to know deep down that his going back will break the back of the Democratic opposition to the plan.

I don't blame him however, like I said it has to be really hard to fight this. If this guy is certain to go back, then the others should all go back with him, so that he doesn't have to take the blame alone.

4. This sucks, expect
another "special" session to be called immediately upon his return. Any news on the lawsuit filed to block the reredistricting, this IS nakedly illegal.

Although these posts are from different sources, they report the same story about Sen. John Whitmire. Please continue discussion in the earliest thread, which can be found here:

bluestateguy, your link to the Dallas News article would be very helpful within the other thread, and I hope you'll post it there.

:-)

Thanks!
