...wouldn't it be more, you know, American to actually try him in a court of law, rather than just whacking him, all questions unanswered?

Just sayin'.

Edited on Fri Oct-29-04 04:13 PM by Amigust
Sounds awfully convenient for the Terrist-in-Chief, by implication relieving him of complicity. About as convenient as the 9/11 Whitewash Commission Report.

21. No transcript yet
They just showed a very brief clip--he looked well fed, well dressed (quite fresh looking robes, in fact), it was definitely him, his beard is longer, grayer, and I did not see his left hand move. He gestured with his right.

They just got the vid from AJ--they probably have the court reporter types doing the subtitles now.

19. The spin?
Is that going to be OUR spin...are we going to look like idiots in the final weekend cheering that bin Laden is free as if he's the second coming of Huey Newton? Please. Let's show some restraint about this. He is a sworn enemy of our country, and the fact that he's still at large underscores more Bush incompetence. But let's keep the gloating to an inaudible hum.

42. Gloating? Are you that out of touch with real dems???
We're pissed as hell. George Bush didn't care enough about this guy to put any serious effort into getting him. W wanted to get his war on in Iraq. The Resident has put us all in danger with his lack of attention to real terrorists, his creation of even more with his heavy handed, reasonless war, killing thousands of innocents, and then leaving plenty of explosives just lieing around so terrorist he created would be well equiped.

Here are Georgies own words on Osama. "I don't know where he is.You know, I just don't spend that much time on him... I truly am not that concerned about him." Press Conference, 3/13/02

77. Just out of curiousity, why do you continue to believe that OBL was....
...responsible for 911? Is it because the NeoCons told you?

You do remember that OBL originally denied any involvement in the attacks, don't you? Don't you consider that to be VERY strange behavior for such a "sworn enemy" of the U. S.? And how come nobody's been able to find ANY links between the hijackers and OBL/Al Qaeda?

And if OBL/Al Qaeda didn't plan and execute the 911 attacks, who did? Better yet, who stood to gain the most by such an attack?

How about THAT for "logic"? Are you grasping it yet?

And who translated the tape(s)?

Look, I do not like ObL. But I also do not like the fact that this administration never gave us the evidence we were promised (Powell, I'm looking at you) that would prove ObL and al Qaeda pulled off 9/11.

Could they have? There's a good chance, yes. But bullshit 'evidence' like the Fat Osama tape do NOT constitute proof.

We are outraged, DISGUSTED, bullshit, that the Kennebunkport cowboy who vowed to getim, dead or alive, who vowed to smokim outta their holes, has done nothing, and this THUG is ADDRESSING THE NATION in clearer language than the weecowboy ever did. The spin, and it ain't spin, is that we are BULLSHIT. Bullshit at the INCOMPETENCE of our leadership!

Here he is, tanned, rested and ready, he has not been hiding in a cave, unless he had a sunlamp. His robes are beautiful, very nicely sewn and laundered--high end. He looks very well nourished, healthy, RELAXED, and he is speaking in a strong, clear voice, in plain sentences.

We can't find a guy who is six foot five in a country of people who are five eight? What does that say about the way weecowboy is prosecuting this so-called war on terra? This points to WEEWEE incompetence. We are outraged!! Bush said he might be dead, that he was not important, that he was not a PRIORITY....and here he is, lecturing us about MY PET GOAT. Talk about cutting the balls off of Bush!

28. Don't forget: AL QAEDA IS AFRAID OF JOHN KERRY.
WE WANT BUSH TO WIN

The statement said it supported President Bush in his reelection campaign, and would prefer him to win in November rather than the Democratic candidate John Kerry, as it was not possible to find a leader "more foolish than you (Bush), who deals with matters by force rather than with wisdom."

In comments addressed to Bush, the group said:

"Kerry will kill our nation while it sleeps because he and the Democrats have the cunning to embellish blasphemy and present it to the Arab and Muslim nation as civilization."

"Because of this we desire you (Bush) to be elected."

62. Sounds pretty bad for Bush IMO
From MSNBC

Al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, in a videotape broadcast Friday on Al-Jazeera television, claimed full responsibility for the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in the United States and warns Americans that “your security is not in the hands of Kerry or Bush or al-Qaida. Your security is in your own hands.

<snip>

Bin Laden says “we decided to destroy towers in America” because “we are a free people” who wanted to “regain the freedom” of their nation. He accuses President Bush of “misleading” the American people for the three years since the Sept. 11 attacks. Most of bin Laden’s message is in regard to Bush, who faces Democrat John Kerry in next week’s presidential election.

He ridicules Bush for reacting slowly to the Sept. 11 attacks, saying: “I never thought that the supreme leader would leave 50,000 of his people in the two towers to face the terrifying events alone at the time they were in need for him.”

47. Very very bad for Kerry; Bin Laden is electioneering anti-Bush
There is only one reason for Bin Laden to come out now, after 3 years.

Bin Laden knows that his continued existence is Bush's biggest failure and Bush's biggest weakness. So Bin Laden makes his first video appearance in 3 years on the eve of the election. Reminding the american people of Bush's biggest failure.

There is only one possible reason for this. Bin Laden is trying to influence the election so that Bush will lose.

This is terrible. People really will vote for Bush if they think Bin Laden is for Kerry. And this tape proves he is for Kerry.

91. Unfortunately, I think it does.
Come on, whats the possible motivation to release a tape directed at the american public four days before an election? The purpose can be nothing other than to influence the election.

And he spends his time bashing Bush.

I have no doubt Bin Laden thinks he's very clever and that he is going to make Bush lose. I never said he is for Kerry.

But that will be the republican spin, and it will resonate. Just a question of how loud and for how long. Whether it will just fire up the freepers, or go on to sway the dimwitted waverers.

I hope that the public reaction is "Hey, Bush is so incompetent, he never did get that Bin Laden guy." But I fear that it will be "hey, Bin Laden is for Kerry, a vote for Kerry is a vote for Bin Laden.

You cannot ignore or censor this analysis. Kerry can change things with his response. His response must nip this in the bud. but you must acknowledge a problem to deal with it.

Skinner, don't go sounding like a Bushie who simply refuses to hear anything that doesn't fit his worldview.

I doubt Bin Laden would realize that his act could produce the opposite effect.

Public opinion is an extremely fickle thing, noone predicts it with 100% accuracy. Trying to strategize how a foreign society would react is next to impossible.

121. Bin Laden has absolutely nothing to gain from a Kerry presidency.
Bin Laden is a Terrorist. The whole purpose of terror is to create an atmosphere of chaos, uncertainty, and fear, which they exploit to achive their political goals. Under Bush, chaos, uncertainty, and fear are way up worldwide.

Under Bush, OBL's recruitment went way up, mostly because of the Iraq war.

Under Bush, hatred for the United States around the globe increased dramatically. That is good for OBL.

Under Bush, OBL is free to do whatever the hell he wants, without any significant interference from the US Government.

No, Bin Laden does not want Kerry to win. He is no fool. He knows which candidate is better for him. Your analysis is simply wrong.

OF COURSE Bin Laden spends the entire tape bashing Bush. Think about it. Bin Laden is our most hated enemy. He's not going to help re-elect Bush by releasing a tape saying what a great job Bush is doing. OBL is doing exactly what he needs to do to help Bush.

Also, in the future, please do not compare me to a Bushie. Thanks.

137. Well, we get to the same place through the opposite paths.
In the end, regardless of Bin Laden's subjective purpose, as you said, he is doing exactly what he needs to do to help Bush. Whether that is the result of a mistake and an unintended consequence, or an incredibly clever double-fake-out doesn't matter. What matters is the public perception and the impact it might have.

Thats why I am suprised you shushed me.

And in any event, on the issue of personal motiviation, if you beleive, as Bin Laden does, that you can take on America and get away with it, you clearly have so much chutzpah that who is president doesn't even enter into your calculations.

Whereas, if the Arab nutcase world percives Bin Laden as having taken down Bush, outlasted Bush, it would be a tremendous propaganda point for Bin Laden and it would greatly increase his reputation. He has motivation to want Bush to lose. You cannot dismiss it out of hand. Sheer personal animosity would account for it.

Nobody conned me.

Here is a question: what was Bin Laden's motivation in making this speech?

Answer it. I dare you.

The only question is in what percentage of the population responds as I fear that they will, by thinking Bin Laden wants Kerry to win. Its a certainty that some people will respond that way. We can just hope that it will not be enough to sway the election.

You must be prepared to deal with the spin. The reality is not what matters, only the public response. I have pointed out what I beleive will be the response of a significant portion of the public. Don't attack me for recognizing the issue this raises.

Bush is f*cked...he let Osama go and there he is tanned and well-fed - that's not Kerry's fault. Meanwhile, this corrupt administration that is being investigated by the FBI and took us into a war that has created a "hell-hole of terrorism", failed to secure the peace and 380 tons of explosives now in terrorists hands and at a cost to taxpayers of $200Billion and counting and 1100+ kids dying and 7000+ kids wounded and 100,000+ Iraqi citizens and counting daily...has screwed us and everything they touch....we aren't safer and America can see for itself on video just "how safe Bush" has made us....and OBL mocked him....it hurts Bush as it well should.

This may have been a persuasive argument if you had considered that the people most likely to be fooled and persuaded by a bin Laden appearance RIGHT BEFORE the American election, are uninformed individuals already waving their flags for Bush. Most undecideds are skeptical about the political process, in and of itself, and were expecting such manipulation to occur.

An indictment of Bush does not equal an endorsement for Kerry. No matter what the chattering news-monkies may say.

149. IF BUSH WINS, THE TERRORISTS WIN
I copied this from a local forum.

CNN reports a Osama Bin Laden tape from an Arab media outlet. This is probably going to help Bush. Sitting presidents historically get a bounce from a major national security or terrorist incident.

People must be made to understand that if Bush wins, the terrorists win. It's very likely we let Bin Laden escape Tora Bora by not committing a conventional US military force to cut off the retreat to Pakistan. He ignored terrorism before 9-11 and he has SLOWED DOWN our securing of suitcase nukes from the Old Soviet Union. He has a tendency to panic (9-11) and underestimate the complexity and danger of his foreign policy decisions (Iraq, North Korea, Israel, Iran).

We need to get the word out.

IF BUSH WINS, THE TERRORISTS WIN.

while 50,000 of his people were in danger. Also that he had no problem with the bushes because they reminded him of arab royalty!! tuned in late but that was good.

115. No.. I'm pretty sure he's an intelligent (but evil) guy..
I think he is saying that it's in the american's hands, meaning we have the power to resist candidates and policies that are anti-muslim. This whole thing has become Christian vs. Muslim, whether anyone wants to admit it or not. That's why a theocracy, which is what we're in for if Bush wins, is extremely dangerous for a country like ours... There are too many other religions in the world, and here at home, for ruling Christian nation.. the way Bush wants it.

For some reason, Bush is so focused on his death grudge with Saddam, that he forgot about OBL.

If Osama says X, all True Americans should say !X. Therefore, you must support Bush.

Does anyone else remember that goofy 2-part episode of X-Files where Mulder switches bodies with an MiB played by Michael McKean? In it, McKean claims that Saddam Hussein is actually an actor, and the feds trot him out for a little "saber rattling" whenever they need to divert the public's attention from what's going on at home.

Who knew Chris Carter would be so prophetic?

83. Bin Laden talks about "our" security. Who is "our"?
My guess would be the Islamic world, particularly the Middle East and Central Asia.

Perhaps he is telling us to get out of the Middle East, leave Iran alone and quite supporting Israel, or at least its activities outside its own internationally recognized borders. If we do that, we won't be hit, otherwise, he'll strike?

96. first longer story.....
"Your security is not in the hands of (Democratic candidate John) Kerry or Bush or al-Qaida. Your security is in your own hands," bin Laden said.

"To the U.S. people, my talk is to you about the best way to avoid another disaster," he said. "I tell you: security is an important element of human life and free people do not give up their security."

"If Bush says we hate freedom, let him tell us why we didn't attack Sweden, for example. It is known that those who hate freedom do not have dignified souls, like those of the 19 blessed ones," he said, referring to the 19 hijackers.

"We fought you because we are free .. and want to regain freedom for our nation. As you undermine our security we undermine yours."

119. BBC Report w/ (more) details
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/3966741.stm

In his opening remarks, the al-Qaeda leader accused President George W Bush of deceiving Americans in the years since the 11 September 2001 attacks.

He compared the Bush administration to what he termed corrupt Arab regimes.
...
He said the attacks on the US would have been less severe if President Bush had been more alert.

But he added that the security of the American people depended neither on Mr Bush nor on his challenger, John Kerry, but on US policy.

Despite entering the fourth year after 11 September, Bush is still deceiving you and hiding the truth from you and therefore the reasons are still there to repeat what happened," he said.

168. Actually he's right on all counts
What he is saying is that Bush is a failure, that he is trying to install a theocratic dictatorship such as Khomeini did in Iran, that Bush failed to protect us on 9/11, that he is hiding the truth from us and we are therefore less safe, and that our security depends on US demanding a shift in our foreign policy--which is NOT going to happen with BushCo and will happen with Kerry IF WE DEMAND IT as US citizens. He is also saying, all they want is their freedom and their country back, which is what we want as well.

124. Junta floated trial balloon re canceling elections. We blew back at them
They try intimidation/voter roll purges, destroying registration cards for Dems, misplacing thousands of absentee ballots in FL and now in California. After all their efforts, we publish information cards and phone numbers for people who encounter trouble voting and Kerry's campaign form a Minute Man force of lawyers to protect people's rights at a moments notice.

They know there is no way in hell their boy is gonna win and despite their best efforts with BBV and thug tactics, they can't be sure of stealing the vote either. Since these boys can't leave anything to chance, lest most of them go to jail for their crimes, they trot out the Boogey Man to scare the rabbits back into their duct taped holes.

The junta floated the trial balloon about canceling elections. 370+ tons of explosives are missing and the Boogey Man speaks.

The junta floated the trial balloon about canceling elections. We shot it down. They have been trying to find a different route to the same destination ever since.

Boo!

152. Bin Laden does not deserve ANY air time in this country
I'm sorry, but the man is a murderer.

That would be like showing tapes of Charles Manson rambling on about why more people have to die. Or before he died, showing a tape of Tim McVeigh and letting him tell the American people why the people in Oklahoma had to die.

I call complete and utter bullshit. There is no reason to give this man air time here. The US media fails to air stories and pictures all the time that are seen in other parts of the world. But oh my god, Bin Laden has spoken and we have to rush the tape on our TV??? WTF?? Why give him the audience.

Any tape from this man should be banned from TV except for the tape of his capture and trial.

Thanks for listening....

154. IF BUSH WINS, THE TERRORISTS WIN
From a local forum:

To the jihadists we are all infidels, and our way of life is a threat to them(their perspective)
