BBC: Iraq deaths claim 'to be studied'
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/3964311.stm

~snip~

The UK Government will "examine with very great care" claims around 100,000 Iraqi civilians have died as a result of the US-led invasion, Jack Straw has said.
A study in the Lancet said the majority of the victims were women and children killed due to military activity.

The UK foreign secretary told BBC's Today that another independent estimate of civilian deaths was around 15,000.

~snip~

It said poor planning, air strikes by coalition forces and a "climate of violence" had led to the deaths in Iraq.

The risk of death from violence for civilians in Iraq was now 58 times higher than before the war, it said.

1. The Lancet is a highly-respected professional paper.

... and not one prone to scare-stories or partisan politics. My guess would be that they did their homework carefully before running this.

"not one prone to scare-stories"

*cough*MMR*cough*AndrewWakefield*cough*

They are one of the most respected medical publications in the world (after NEJM and JAMA), but they do occasionally make very big mistakes.

>>To G. and Salam:
I have just finished Salam's book, sitting comfortably in my house in the US. I am utterly amazed at the articulateness - no, the unbelievable, staggering articulateness of salam pax. there are so many aspects to his blog that I want to share it with a number of different people, for different reasons: the asshole patriots i have the displeasure of knowing need to read the perfectly-argued comments about the West's misuse of Iraq/Iraqis for decades as well as the irony of democracy thru bombing (more succinct than any american pundit i've read); my american-born son and my american friends need to read the bits about interacting with western culture, since my ex-husband is from the middle-east, and even thru his unpleasantness i've always had sympathy for what he was/is going thru; every flippin' american should read what it's like to be bombed; the nobel committee needs to review this, for obvious reasons (sorry, don't know the committee personally - wish i did!).
and now, i have pictures.
thank you both. my best to you and your family and friends. i wish i could do more than 'wish you well'; perhaps getting everyone i know to read the book and log on to see the photos will help.<<
