Bush arrives today, coalition of parties oppose visit - good report
However, the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) has expressed opposition to the visit, asking Bush to postpone the visit or call it off outright. The U.S. President is also billed to attend the Leon Sullivan Summit opening in Abuja on Saturday.

n a letter addressed to the U.S. leader, the CNPP cited the controversy trailing the outcome of the last general elections in the country and considered the planned visit as unwelcome.

"In consideration of the current political situation in the country resulting from the widespread and widely reported malpractices which accompanied the general elections of April 12 to May 3, your plan to visit our country at this point in time is at best ill-timed and appears insensitive to the wishes of Nigerians and their struggle for a just and truly democratic society.

"Mr. President may be aware that the just-concluded elections in Nigeria have been adjudged by most Nigerians as well as local and international observers as neither free nor fair. The degree of violence, rigging and other forms of electoral malpractices perpetrated, especially during the presidential election by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in collaboration with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), elements of the Military and the Police, have been documented and are currently the subject of litigation in the Federal Court of Appeal".

The group identified the European Union Observer Mission (EU-EOM); the International Republican Institute (TRI); the National Democratic Institute (NDI); the Catholic Secretariat Election Monitors; and the Transition Monitoring Group (TMG) among other local and foreign observers that have criticised the elections.

2. Bush arrives Nigeria today - Must READ. Me The Press material
The Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) petitioned President George Bush over reported malpractices that allegedly characterised the last general elections, saying his visit to Nigeria was ill timed and a clear indication of insensitivity to the wishes of the Nigerian electorates.

The CNPP said in the petition dated July 1, 2003, and addressed to President George Bush, that his visit to Nigeria today reflects America’s insensitivity to the struggle of Nigerian electorates for a just and truly democratic society.

The eight-point petition, signed by CNPP chairman, Alhaji Abdulkadir Balarabe Musa highlighted the alleged irregularities that characterised the last general elect-ions as well as the reaction of local and international observers describing the entire exercise as fraudulent.

"The dangerous slide of Nigerian democracy into a one party state dictatorship commenced with the Obasanjo regime’s gruesome assault and bastardisation of democratic institutions," the petitioners said and advised President Bush not to recognise President Obasanjo as a duly elected Nigerian leader.

According to CNPP, the government’s "deliberate starving" of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of funds and manipulation of the Electoral Act 2001 as well as the assassination of the former attorney-general and minister of justice, Chief Bola Ige SAN, were enough evidence against the Obasanjo government.

"Since the conclusion of these fraudulent elections, the administration has intensified its programme of intimidation, harassment, illegal detention and persecution of opposition parties, which it started in the period preceding the elections," CNPP said.

3. Corruption: legislator petitions Bush
A former member of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Hon. M.S. Abubakar has urged President George Bush of America to show concern over what he described as corrupt attitude of Nigerian leaders.

Hon. Abubakar in an open letter to the American President made available to Daily Trust in Abuja, argued that some Nigerian legislators were wrongly elected during the last general elections.

According to him, a member of the House of Representatives from Bauchi State was wrongly elected despite allegations of corrupt practices, adding, "it would be of utmost importance for you to look into a few of the many characters that avail themselves in some very responsible offices."

He alleged that Bauchi State legislator was dismissed from the service of a leading bank in Nigeria for corrupt practices, yet he contested and won election contrary to section 66 (h) of the constitution.

I can't find the post now but someone posted the Me The Press Incident partial transcript. I posted that Dean and the Dems. should turn the tables on the GOP media whores. The candidates should make the journalist look like fools by saying, 'What a stupid question, (how many service people do we have?), you should be asking about Bush endorsing a President who is a coup leader. You do know about Nigeria? Don't you?' Why aren't you reporting about this very important event?

Dean is the reason for the Demoratic turn-around. The reason things are so bad are because of Gephardt, Daschle... It's better off they resign and we start over. Gephardt is a loser and sleaze. He should even be running. He's just trying to pawn out his votes. It's immoral. Let the people with spines take over. Dean was the first and only one to stand up over the last 2 years. He deserves our respect.
