Cuba's archery team will miss the world championships and possibly the Olympics because the athletes weren't granted U.S. visas in time, sports officials said Friday.
Nemesio Rodriguez, president of the Cuban archery federation, said two archers received visas Friday and two others received no response. The championships, which serve as qualifying for the 2004 Athens Games, start Saturday in New York.
"We began the process within the time specified by the United States," Rodriguez said, adding that U.S. consular officials interviewed the athletes about their requests May 19.
He said the delay in visas was "a result of a hostile policy toward our country, in detriment to the purest values of Olympism."
Cuba's archery team includes 1999 Pan American Games female champion Yaneris Perez.
"It's not fair. They cannot deny us the right to participate. They are also taking form us the possibility of classifying for the Olympic Games," Perez said. (snip/...)
