2. Hang on Troops...only 6 more months and the killing will stop.
George has told us so, as that is when he starts campaigning for re-selection.

5. We need to have running talleys of troops killed in Afghanistan...
...just like we have for those killed in Iraq.

Perhaps a total of troops who died in action since Chimpy came to power.

By the way, anyone have a clue how many U.S. troops have died in Afghanistan?

8. I have been trying to get solid numbers on that
for a long time - a lot of searching and even posts to DU have not been helpful. However, someone slipped up last week when a US soldier died. And Australian paper posted 31 killed since the beginning of our "war on terror". Since then there has been another, and now these two poor kids. Will look for that link in a minute. I think, of course, that number is riduclously low. It can't include accidents, etc, just like *'s Iraqi mess. I read some time ago that the US was hiding the true numbers killed in Afghan hostilities, but could never find a reliable source.

19. I've been trying to find the names of the dead in Afghanistan
with very little luck, as well. I searched for hours, posted the question in activism, and remfan (one of DU's best researchers) found this for me: http://www.downstreetmagazine.com/archives/V2N4/working/working.htm
but I'm not sure if it's complete.

7. CNN Link
CNN) -- Two U.S. soldiers died Sunday in Afghanistan after fighting with unknown attackers near Shkin, in Paktika province, south of Kabul, U.S. Central Command said.

A third coalition soldier was in stable condition after evacuation to Bagram from a treatment facility north of Shkin, Central Command said in a statement.

The three soldiers were on a combat mission at 1 a.m. when they were attacked near a base about five miles northeast of Shkin, the Central Command statement said.

... as Ann Coulter insisted, although she was speaking about soldiers in Iraq...

A. Coulter said soldiers in Iraq are "getting their hair mussed."

11. The WAR that isn't talked about...The Forgotten War.
Afghanistan is soooooo pre -Iraq.

Another item NOT mentioned in the media: the cost for Afghanistan.
When forced into a corner, Rummy finally admitted to a monthly cost for Afghanistan of $900million. I'm comfortable rounding to an even $1Billion per month. Added to the bill in Iraq of $4Billion= a cool $5Billion per month, give or take a few hundred million dollars. None of this is included in the budget. ----$5,000,000,000/month

And these are only the visible, up-front costs. The real cost (in dollars and blood) will NEVER be calculated.

How do they get away with this????

12. My Nephew is there...
My brother's kid was shipped over there three weeks ago.
There is so little media coverage and information about
what is going on in Afghanistan. Everytime my phone rings
I am afraid it will be unthinkable news.

I am so sick of all of this.
How did we get to this point in just a few short years.
It is simply unbelievable.
I am so depressed.

14. My neighbor kid, I guess he's 19 or maybe 20 now spent 8 months in
Afghanistan, came back to the US for a month (at his base in NC, not even a trip home here to OK) then off to Iraq. Hope he and your nephew stay safe.

15. His parents must be so worried...
My brother seems to have gone into some sort of denial.
I think it is the only way he can cope with the situation.
DAMN the corporate dictators who are using our
young people to further their agenda.
Damn them to hell.

I feel so helpless and hopeless.
It just continues to escalate and it feels
as though there is NOTHING we can do to stop it.

God help those young people-
we know that the neocons don't care a bit
about them.

18. His mom is a dear, sweet lady who couldn't find either Iraq or Afghanistan
on a world map. Yes, she's worried about him, but the 'pride' thing overrides any concerns she could have about the whole damn enterprise. I almost understand that...as a way of denying the awful truth. It's hard for me to bring it up without seeming to be insensitive (to Robert)...she hasn't yet gotten to the point where belief that the "commander in chief" is a criminal, lying bastard is doable. I haven't given up.

21. My nephew's in Korea
5 years ago, I wouldn't have given that another thought. Now.... Early in the Iraq war, a soldier with the same name as my nephew was killed. That was a brain-freeze and heart-stopping moment. The middle initial, age & hometown were all wrong -- and, of course, I knew I'd have heard the news through the family -- but I checked the name on 3 different sites before I could breath again.

And * hasn't been to a single funeral for a single soldier ... nor has he made one trip to Andrews AFB to see the coffins coming off the transport plane.

It's hard not to feel helpless and hopeless, but we must not give up because we're the only hope left.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A7781-2003Aug31.html

Two American soldiers were killed Sunday in a firefight with suspected Taliban fighters in eastern Afghanistan, while hundreds of Taliban poured into remote southern mountains to join a week-long battle with Afghan forces and their U.S. allies.

The two soldiers died and another was wounded in a 90-minute gunbattle in Afghanistan's eastern Paktika province, near the Pakistani border. Four guerrillas were also killed.

It was the latest in escalating violence in Afghanistan, where guerrillas from the radical Islamic Taliban regime have appeared to regroup, launching bolder and better coordinated attacks against Afghan government targets. Four U.S. soldiers have been killed during fighting in less than two weeks.

Now our guys are paying for not getting it done correctly in Afghanistan and our coddling of Pakistan.

24. The Bushies are finding out brute force as of old is not the way to go
But, as Generals who fight the last war, this is diff.

and the solutions elude them. So they plod on, a one option team, a football squad who only knows one play. Sad, but true. Look it, they still in the dark. Even the other countries are laughing at us. And to crown all this, we about to see Ahnold of California make it to the Gov Mansion. The tough guy who refuse to join in a debate??? How Courageous of him to reject the debate. "The Peoples Governor" my ass.
