Ky. Hopeful Uses Jesus on Billboard Ad
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- A City Council candidate is protesting a billboard put up by his incumbent opponent that proclaims "Elect Jesus Christ Savior" and includes a box stating "Jacques Wigginton for Council."

Wigginton, a preacher, said the sign, which went up Thursday, was intended not to promote his candidacy but to support the "Elect Jesus" campaign, a local initiative he started to promote faith and community involvement. He said he had the "Wigginton for Council" box printed as small as possible.

But Tom Blues, his opponent in the Lexington council race, said Wigginton appears to be likening himself to Christ.

"He's certainly putting his name on the same level and in the same context (as Jesus)," Blues said. "The implication is clear that if you elect Jesus, then you'll elect Jacques. Not only is it sacrilegious ... it's a kind of desperate, even hysterical sort of appeal."

2. as small as possible?
Edited on Sat Oct-16-04 08:15 PM by enki23
had i been the sign painter, it would have been microscopic. of course, he didn't *actually* request any such thing.

jesus motherfucking christ, the nerve of some assholes. that one's just beyond the pale. some days i wish these assholes could have just enough afterlife to learn there was no such thing as an afterlife. or better, that their hell existed, and was reserved for those who believed in it.

3. Saw a big sign "Vote the Bible" outside the Solid Rock Church
This is the church with the tasteful 42-foot tall fiberglass "Jesus in quicksand" statue.

13. Ah, the Touchdown Jesus
There's a mural at a midwest college of that, I think, but I can't remember which one it was. We all got a big kick out of it, though...

16. It's about 1950 in Lexington.
And about 1960 in Louisville. Elsewhere in the Bluegrass State, it's about 1890.

21. 1960? 1890?
If only we were so lucky! Sounds more like the 16th and 17th centuries in England to me ... on the verge of a bloody, religious civil war. We seem to have forgotten why our Founding Fathers insisted on a strict doctrine of separation between Church and State. We forget the lessons of history at our peril!
