BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- As part of new security operations around Falluja, Iraqi special forces and U.S. Marines have set up vehicle checkpoints in and around the volatile city, a U.S. military statement said Friday.
"At the request of the Iraqi Interim Government, Iraqi Security Forces and Multi-National Forces are conducting these operations to enhance security and stability of the country and to ensure an intimidation-free elections process," the statement said.

The announcement came hours after the combined forces launched a major air and ground operation late Thursday, aimed at disrupting future attacks by insurgents who currently control the city.
Officials from Falluja's general hospital said two people were killed and eight others wounded after a tank shell hit the Haye al-Jolan neighborhood about 11 p.m. (4 p.m. EDT) Thursday.
