U.S. Demands Ukraine Campaign Abuse End

The State Department accused the Ukraine government Thursday of engaging in serious violations of democratic procedures in the country's presidential election campaign.

Spokesman Richard Boucher cited the disruption of opposition rallies, the muzzling of independent media and other abuses.

He said these activities "cast doubt on the Ukrainian government's commitment to its democratic obligations."

Boucher urged Ukrainian authorities to end the violations, permit voters to make their choices freely and to adhere international standards for tabulating the results.
