Ohio parties may object to some voters
Little-used '53 law lets `challenger' at poll dispute qualifications to cast ballot

By Lisa A. Abraham

Beacon Journal staff writer

Democrats and Republicans plan to invoke a little-used 1953 state law to put challengers at the polls -- a move that could create additional mayhem Nov. 2.

The action comes at a time when poll workers already are expected to be strained by confusion over provisional ballots and a glut of newly registered voters. The move has sent elections officials scrambling to set up rules to keep order at the polls if challengers are there.

Republicans and Democrats point fingers at each other for throwing challengers into the mix.

Challengers are representatives from each political party who are allowed to sit in polling places and literally speak up to challenge a person's right to vote.

There will be KKK-ish assholes there telling Blacks and Latinos they can't vote unless they know how to read and write English.

Doesn't the Voting Rights Act overrule this bullshit?

6. Let me be perfectly clear here
I will be happy to provide my picture ID or registration card to the precinct workers if they ask for it, but if some goon from either political party messes with my right to vote at the polls....

well lets just say that that person better make sure they have a good dental plan.

12. Make sure you vote BEFORE...
you pop one of these assholes in the mouth.
Just keep your cool, go in there and vote and come out swinging!
Also be very careful not to get arrested between now and election day.
I'm sure the cops in Ohio will be looking really hard for DWI's in black neighborhoods etc.....

7. Man, they are really, really desperate, aren't they?
Couldn't get Diebold machines (few of any kind, in fact), couldn't disenfranchise through the registration process, can't kick enough out by refusing provisional ballots to swing it their way ... so they have to resort to inviting brawls at inner-city polling places. Y'all know they just passed a concealed carry law here, too. Yowza -- this could really get ugly.

This is just a trial balloon, I'm guessing -- they did the same shit in Florida in 2000, didn't they? I remember hearing all kinds of attempts to intimidate minority and poor voters. Wanna bet there's bloodshed over this? I won't be the least surprised.

I usually don't hate people, even Bush* (believe me, I hate what they've done), but Ken Blackwell and the Ohio GOP are pushing me closer and closer to the edge every fucking day.

8. I think this article misses the real point.
The problem is not that they would be disqualifying voters -- those would probably be legitimate disqualifications -- the problem is that they could mount so many challenges as to create long lines that thwart voters. Here is a related thread:

10. Here in PA it costs money to challenge a voter
It is either $5 or $10. If it turns out that the person is not eligible, you get your money back. If they are, you don't.

9. Most states only allow you to challenge a voter if you have personal...
...knowledge that the voter isn't a resident of the precinct. You eiether have to know everyone in your precinct personally, or you have to know the challenged voter definitely lives somewhere else.

You couldn't have a person from Oregon go down to Palm Beach and start challenging voters because they have no knowledge of the local community (unless they happen to see someone they know from home in Oregon trying to vote in Palm Beach).

Back in '53 people might have been able to do this. However, it's no longer possible because precincts are bigger and people move a lot.
