Bush: God has called us
http://www.news24.com/News24/South_Africa/Bush_in_Africa/0,,2-7-1505_1386439,00.html

<snip>He pledged to Africans, "You are not alone. America has decided to act."

"I believe God has called us into action. Our country has got a responsibility, we are a great nation, we are a wealthy nation, we have a responsibility to help a neighbour in need, a brother and sister in crisis."

Aids and Africa activists have accused Bush of devoting insufficient political muscle to forcing Congress to fully fund his anti-Aids plan.

3. one could....
.... easily arrive to the conclusion that if there *was* a god he would bitch-slap Bush* into the next century. :)

Reminds me of an old Jethro Tull lyric:

If Jesus saves
Well he better save himself
From the gory glory seekers
Who use his name in death

(this comment not intended to disparage anyone's personal beliefs, I just really despise the misuse of god)

41. Hey, if we believers could do something about Bush* and others

who claim to have a straight line to God, don't you think we would have already done it? Bush* doesn't listen to leaders in his own church or other churches. He blew them all off about the war on Iraq. The Pope flat out told him he'd be going into Iraq without God but Bush* didn't pay any heed.

46. Don't mean to thump on you, but I don't think enough's being done.
Look, it's something I can't do. I'm not part of the group.

Yes, I think people should do more. I'm sorry, but I want to see more willingness to confront and try to take back god from these theocrats.

Those believers who love pluralism, cosmopolitanism and cooperation are friends, and I wish them to presume I'm closer to them than the nazibots. Agnostics believe in the here and now, and as such are often good neighbors and friends.

No. I don't think people of faith have done enough to fight this and channel their energies to take back the debate. The current incarnation of the Republicans is the party that demands religion; ours is the one that accepts it. It's frustrating. I'm sure it is for you. That's why I kept it at a civil--I thought--plane.

No. This is for keeps.

I support you in your endeavors; more than anything else, it needs to be brought to the attention of those who've never really encountered non-believers that we can be family people and good citizens too.

Nuff said?

55. It is indeed frustrating and one reason it is so frustrating is that it is

well nigh impossible to say publicly that G.W. Bush* is not a Christian -- or even that he doesn't act like a Christian -- without being hammered by those who believe he is. Those people also tend to believe they are the arbiters of who is and who isn't a good Christian.

I wasn't insulted by what you said and didn't intend my response to sound surly or annoyed with you. It's Bush* who is annoying to all of us. And for what it's worth, I think that believers with whom you would ever want to associate do not regard non-believers as lesser beings. Looking with disfavor on others is more the province of the hidebound fundamentalist sorts, and they would likely consider me "other" as much as you.

Democrats generally don't like to play the religion card -- it's one of the things we dislike about Holy Joe Lieberman, after all. We should be able to talk about religion and morality (which are not the same thing) and stop allowing the GOP to set themselves up as the moral and godly party but a lot of Dems, expecially the sort who post at DU, would not like such a move by the party.

How do you propose that people of faith take back the debates without being accused of preaching or proselytizing? Those on the right are addressing people who largely support public prayer, after all, and are unlikely to offend their base. Not so on the left. But perhaps you see something that I don't?

42. The problem with God is
that good, God-fearing men can do things to save another's soul that would cause evil atheists to blink. It's astonishing what people are capable of, if it's to save someone from eternal damnation, and the Christian church seems the worst of the lot. Islam has historically been much more tolerant of other faiths.

But if Bush is going to help the poor nations, does that mean he's going to stop all subsidies for competing US industries, and support a free and open market?

I think I came across it about the instant it was posted, so i got to read it.

Its becoming a real confort to me that so many people have left Captain Unelected's defense, that the ones left are just the drooling jibbering bags of irrational disjointed bile that would follow anyone into hell just for shits and giggles.

A large influx of seemingly rational people with good arguments would be a real show of support, but those people seem to have abandoned the shrub for a policy of silence.

53. As a believer, I am truly offended whenever * quotes God,
by saying God told him to do something, or even just that he thinks God told him do something--especially when these things seem antithetical to the word of God.

Someone earlier in the thread posted the Biblical passage about false prophets, and I definitely believe that it applies to this admin and those around them.
