N.C. sees high for new voter sign-up
A record number of new voters have registered across North Carolina this year -- the result, officials say, of a crush of excitement over the November elections with both sides working overtime to get voters to the polls.

snip....

As of Thursday, 39 percent of the new voters registered as Democrats. Republicans claimed 34 percent. About 26 percent signed up as unaffiliated.

North Carolina saw a comparable spike before the 2000 election, when 473,138 people registered in the year leading up to the balloting, Bartlett said.

"What we have is a very hotly contested, tight race for president ... council of state, U.S. Senate and congressional races," Bartlett said. "There's a lot of activity, a lot of close races, and a lot of interest."

Well we are not crushing the pubs in registrations like in OH and FL, but at least we are staying competitive.

4. no doubt. People don't go thru that effort if they're happy
with the status quo.

3. Same here in Virginia
Young people are gonna elect Kerry this time along with sensible old people like me! ;-) And middle age ones as well. AND I think the military will vote for Kerry. Lots of vet in this state too who are voting for him. Just talked with a couple of Vietnam vets recently who said years ago they were angry at Kerry for testifying, but they had grown older and wiser. In retrospect they said Kerry was correct in testifying as he did. Now, that's maturity, don't you think? We need to change some of our ideas as we grow older otherwise we don't grow mentally. And that is what Bush has NEVER done and never will.

7. couldn't agree more..........
i'm glad to hear that some vets are thinking rationally, and looking toward the future. I don't understand this environment that says one can't change his mind when presented with new challenges & new facts. if changing one's mind were a crime, i woulda been imprisoned a long time ago. i'm older & hopefully wiser now.

6. good for you!
Today was the last day for registrations in NC. We now need to put our full effort into getting people to vote! Seriously, registration is the easy part, now we gotta turn 'em out.
