Growing up in US can worsen kids' health

NEW YORK - Foreign-born children are healthier when they arrive in the United States than those of the same age who were born in the country, a study shows.

But the longer immigrant children stay in the US, adopting the diet and lifestyle of their peers, the unhealthier they are likely to become, according to the report released this week

3. Mentally healthier too
That's true of immigrants of all ages. We're stupider, sicker, and crazier. Rah! America!

4. Look around and you see...
Lots and lots of people living frankly weird and troubling lives. Like they are running from something. Steeped in anger. Greed. No empathy.

No way to live. Not at all.

5. They're lost
Feeling abandoned, nowhere to turn. I see it most with 20-something men. Appears consumerism doesn't buy happiness, and is even worse when you discover distaining education got you a minimum wage job which doesn't sit so well when you think you might want to raise a family. America let them down, that's what they think. Lost. I feel bad for them.

6. Some feel betrayed when education doesn't get them a good job
There are lots of recent college grads who have trouble getting good jobs right out of college or even a few years out of college. Here, there are job ads requesting college degrees and experience, which pay $9-$10 an hour. Many people my age feel let down by that.

7. Well sure
That's true. Was true back in the 80's and early 90's too. Hopefully that will change. But the young who disdain education and think they're going to magically get the kind of job their father had, that's permanent. And very sad when you see these young guys with nothing and going nowhere, some with kids they can't begin to support, cut off from their lives. It's a sad, sad mess.
