WBTV general manager wants Rather suspended(NC Affiliate)
Edited on Sat Oct-02-04 10:55 PM by Radius
I strongly believe that Mr. Rather should have been suspended pending the conclusions and recommendations of the independent review panel,"
MARY MACMILLAN, WBTV's vice president and general manager

The general manager of Charlotte's WBTV, one of the South's largest and oldest CBS affiliates, has called on the network to suspend Dan Rather.

In an e-mail to network executives, Channel 3's Mary MacMillan said she believed the anchor of the "CBS Evening News" should be taken off the air until an investigation is resolved into the documents used in a report about President Bush's military service.

POLITICS and NEWS should NEVER MIX! This is a multi million viewer audience.

3. I grew up in Charlotte.
There are lots of democrats there. My point is that allowing politics into local news is bad.

This is the person who MAKES the news for that audience. They set the agenda.

5. Sorry - didn't mean to disparage Charlotte
I was just making the point that things like this do happen in Charlotte. I live in another part of NC.

I agree that politics and news should be separate, but they aren't. They aren't on the national level, and in many local markets the bias is even worse. This is a good example. It could have happened anywhere.

15. I must have missed that
what happened to Sue? When I left Charlotte in 97 she was being touted as the next star in Washington. I would love to know about any troubles she has had. :)

19. JohnBoy & Billy Show, With Sue Myrick
Sue Myrick is now married to a man that she had an affair with while one or both (I forget which) was still married to someone else. This was well known around town. Myrick had a live radio interview on the JohnBoy & Billy Morning Show during drive time. It is basically a very popular radio show here catering to the redneck and racing crowd. There was a call-in segment, and one caller asked her about the affair. Myrick's famous on-air reply, replayed often with appropriate bleeping, was "I don't have to take this shit."

18. Just a minute there
OK, Charlotte is not going to be rated as high on the Democratic scale as some other major urban centers. Even other Southern cities such as Durham, Raleigh and Atlanta may lean more to the Democratic side than Charlotte.

BUT...there is still a very strong Democratic presence in Charlotte. Even though we have a Republican mayor, we also have a veto-proof Democratic majority on the city council and have had for quite a while. Our county commission shifts between Republican and Democratic control depending upon which party wins the pivotal third seat among the three at-large county commissioners. The Republicans have held the majority for the past two years and the Democrats have a very good chance of taking back the majority this time around.

Another thing - Al Gore and the national Democratic party avoided this state like the plague in 2000, yet Gore lost Mecklenburg County (home to Charlotte) by only 3 points! Consider the fact that NC has a very weird law seperating the presidential ticket from the rest of the party ticket for anyone voting straight ticket, meaning that if you vote a straight ticket you also have to vote for the president separately, it could be reasoned the gap would have been much more narrow if you factored in lost straight ticket votes.

There are also a lot of wealthy Democratic donors in this city, some who give mostly to Democratic candidates and others who give solely to Democrats. There are also quite a few liberal-leaning Republicans who shift allegiances based upon the candidate or the circumstances.

We have our share of rightwingers, including a few that have made national headlines, but there is enough of a Democratic presence here to make a real difference at the polls. The districts have been drawn in such a way to give us both rightwing Congresswoman Sue Myrick and the liberal Democratic Congressman Mel Watt. Watt represents the infamous 12th District which was drawn specifically to increase minority representation in the House. The down side of that is that the 9th District, which has spawned Sue Myrick, has become even more safely Republican which means that a rightwinger like Myrick wins over moderate Republicans in the primaries and goes on to hold the seat.

A lot of the real rightwingers in Charlotte and the South in general are the results of redistricting.

6. She's just sucking up...
To 1) her right-wing viewers from all those big fundy churches there, or:

2) her right-wing station owner(s) (more likely of the two).

What a spinless wench!

They need to give Dan a vote of confidence, and fire HER!x(

11. She's right....
Politics and news should never mix. I guess that's why the parent company which owns WBTV gives soft money exclusively to the Republicans:

12. I'm certain this story will bring up the NYT & the WaPo's
disgraceful handling of Whitewater, and we'll no doubt be hearing demands for apologies along with all the talk shows dedicating entire broadcasts to how they got it so wrong. Jeff Gertz and Steno Sue will be exposed as Quislings and the press will hunt them like they did, say Gary Condit.

Oh sorry, I nodded off for a minute there...
