Four suicides in child porn case
BBC News

The Australian authorities say four men investigated during the country's biggest police operation against child pornography have committed suicide.

One of them was a police officer who had been charged with possessing child abuse computer games.

Since it began on Thursday, Operation Auxin has seen more than 200 arrests in raids on more than 400 premises.

It follows an investigation in the US that uncovered international paedophile networks trading images online.

6. I would like everyone to remember
that child molesters are made not born. These men were victims long before they became victimizers.

Does that mean we should have sympathy for them? Yes -- just enough sympathy to recognize that there is a CYCLE of abuse that goes on and that it's the whole CYCLE that must stopped, not just individual criminals (tho stopping individual criminals can serve as part of breaking that cycle).

That said, these men knew that what they were doing was wrong and nothing I've said is meant to suggest that child abusers and child pornographers and consumers not be held accountable for their crimes. But that alone will not get the job done (and their suicides even less, IMO). At the very least, children who have been abused need immediate and sustained therapy so THEY don't grow up to become victimizers and thus perpetuate the cycle.

8. MOST kids who were abused, do not grow up to perpetuate abuse.
Edited on Sat Oct-02-04 06:07 PM by mzmolly
As a former victim of various abuse, I don't see how ANYONE could pass it on to another person knowing the pain it causes.

I agree totally with this:

At the very least, children who have been abused need immediate and sustained therapy so THEY don't grow up to become victimizers and thus perpetuate the cycle.

A person must give themselves "permission" to abuse another and that's where my sympathy ends.

Sexually Abused Kids Don't All Become Adult Abusers: Study
British researchers find only 12 percent became pedophiles

THURSDAY, Feb. 6 (HealthScoutNews) -- A new British study disputes the common belief that someone who is sexually abused as a child will become a sexual predator as an adult.

The researchers found that only 12 percent of 224 boys who had been sexually abused as children later became sexual abusers themselves.

They also discovered that abusers shared similar risk factors growing up, such as abuse from a female or a history of cruelty to animals.

"Most males who are sexually abused are unlikely to become sexual offenders," says the study's author, Dr. David Skuse, a professor of behavioral and brain sciences at the Institute for Child Health in London.

9. hear hear!
I am deeply troubled by the occasionally unwarranted charges spread as fact and the vicious reactions of those who would punish someone they perceive guilty of crimes without due process or any other kind other than a rush to judgement, persecution and punishment.
As sure as the practitioners should be held accountable, and the distributors punished (can you say AOL? Steve Case and his well placed friends like Colin Powell have a great deal to explain to those who would burn Joe Schmoe at the stake), when people are sick they should be offered some chance at health and compassion, not the back of a hand.
Otherwise, we may as well just let the hypocrites like Scalia run the asylum.

12. Pedophilia is a crime, not an illness. These people can't be
rehabilitated according to numerous studies.

I have NO compassion for ANYONE who victimizes children. And, I highly doubt any innocent person would kill themselves were they accused. I think they'd want to stick around and clear their name?

However, my comments are directed at those who molest children, NOT the innocent who are accused of such crimes.

14. Exactly
someone below posted that if they would just auto destruct like this they would do the world a favor.

Not the accused the actual pedophiles. People who hurt defenseless kids and animals for their own gratification deserve a special hell.
