US Airways Group Inc. will cut more than 300 jobs as it prepares to reduce service at Pittsburgh International Airport by nearly one-third this fall.

US Airways, the Arlington, Va., company that filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Sept. 12, began notifying employees of the headcount adjustments on Monday, according to a staff bulletin.

Locally, US Airways will cut 195 full-time and 54 part-time customer-service jobs, according to the bulletin. In addition, 17 mechanic and 42 utility positions will be eliminated.

This fucking mismanaged airline has been holding this sword above the head of the region for years now.

They, and Pittsburgh Most Cherished Asshole, Republican National Conference leader and Senator Rick Santorum, have laid the blame solely on the labor unions. You'd think the workers were living the fat cat life that the CEOs were, by the way Santorum denounces them as greedy, but instead, they are middle class people who work VERY hard for their money. (For example, the stewards only get paid for the hours the craft is flying, yet they have to show up a couple of hours prior, and must remain a couple of hours after, adding up to an 80 hour work week, for which they are paid only for 40. Sound fair to you? Rick Santorum thinks it is outrageous that they get paid as much as they do!)

The "only solution to save the airline" was for workers to accept a 25% wage cut, plus have their benefits and pensions slashed.

Can you imagine losing 25% of your income, when you are earning $25,000-$50,000 a year? We're all supposed to be okay with this? This is the sort of stuff we are supposed to accept and still feel "optimistic" about the future of America?

This shows us that the foundation of the Bush economic plan is that American workers had better get used to the fact that they are going to earn a LOT less in the future. That's it folks -- the "solution" to the US Airways problem is coming to your town, to your company, to your job.

Their solution to outsourcing -- Bush calls it "creating an environment friendly to business" -- is to pay Americans third world wages. The American economy is being transformed into the southern model -- and it's something to be alarmed about....

Despite their lip service to the "post-September 11 world" -- another point that is not being discussed is that the people who are losing their jobs or are being forced to accept 25% pay cuts, etc -- are the people our lives depend upon when we fly -- the pilots who fly the planes, the personnel who maintain watch on our safety, and the crews that have to deal with the fucking life-threatening emergencies that can occur 35,000 in the air! Others are the good folk who tighten the bolts on the tails, and check the engines, so make sure the craft is airworthy. Goddamned Republicans sons of bitches -- I hate them! They can shove their yellow ribbons and their tributes to the victims and their teddy bears to surviving families of crash victims up their ass. All they're good for is -- forcing these brave and well-trained people who keep the asses of the flying public safe and comfortable to accept these terms of employment show us how they REALLY feel about people in the airline industry (excepting their CEO campaign donor buddies).

So now they are forcing it on these poor people. All along, what they have wanted to do is to move south, away from Pittsburgh which has a history of labor having a say in negotiations, to the land of cotton and slavery which does not.

(Did you know that pilots in the south earn something in the range of $24,000 YEARLY, starting? Think they get the best people at that price?

3. A shame
I think that after November the only international flights out of Pittsburgh will be to Toronto and the Bahamas.
