Newsweek: Iraq insurgency is growing, situation is worse than we think.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5973272/site/newsweek/

snip:

"Sixteen months after the war's supposed end, Iraq's insurgency is spreading. Each successful demand by kidnappers has spawned more hostage-takings—to make Philippine troops go home, to stop Turkish truckers from hauling supplies into Iraq, to extort fat ransom payments from Kuwaitis. The few relief groups that remain in Iraq are talking seriously about leaving. U.S. forces have effectively ceded entire cities to the insurgents, and much of the country elsewhere is a battleground. Last week the total number of U.S. war dead in Iraq passed the 1,000 mark, reaching 1,007 by the end of Saturday...."

2. notice that the timeline includes significant increases...
...in U.S. operations "next year." I wonder whether the military is even planning for the contingency that the "mission" might change after the election?

3. This thing is becoming a quagmire...
We're losing lives, blood, money, credibility, stature, and our future in Iraq. People want to focus on who said what and when they said it during the build-up and what someone would have done if they could go back into the past with the full knowledge of today. It's all crap.

With Kerry, we have a plan to get out -- it's not as immediate as some would like, but it is an exit strategy. With Bush, not only will we be mired in Iraq for the next decade, but perhaps we might just combine that little war with another in Iran. So you really have two choices: Kerry's plan or Bush's lack of a plan.

7. Yeah, but Bush has made the world safer
And he's a great leader.

And he's gonna make the world a happy place for Zell Miller's grandkids.

Let's just re-elect the guy already.

8. Those that get their news from Juan Cole and other non-corporate media
knew this long ago. Iraq is simply an unwinnable war. I heard Michael Moore speak in NYC yesterday. He receives a lot of letters from soldiers in Iraq, and Moore said, "The orders in Iraq are to stay off the roads and on the bases until November 2." This would keep down the death toll. We wouldn't want the corporate media to notice that anything is amiss.

But let us now tell you just how rosy everything is! Bush is determined! He's decisive! Everything's improving, except it was never very bad to begin with! Because Bush is large and in charge!

13. Elections in January?
Most of the American people think he is doing a good job.I really fear for those people. There is no plan for Iraq. There is no domestic agenda.Bush and Cheney are running on fear and their media buddies have convinced most of the people they should feel safe. The media never focuses on Iraq or any other issues. They are so concerned about Kerry said and did in the 60's/70's.Every political show is the same crap.Kerry is this,he did this,he said this and Bush is never wrong. They say Kerry has done a poor job establishing where he stands on many issues. They never mention the president has done nothing right in four years.NOTHING!!!Yesterday,Maria Bartiromo from CNBC was on the Chris Matthews show and she predicted Bush would win in a LANDSLIDE by at least 10-12 points.

16. Welcome to DU!!
I love how the media keeps saying "Kerry hasn't said where he stands on the issues" when in fact, he has stated his position on the major issues. What the real truth is that the media doesn't talk at all about Kerry's stance on the issues. When was the last time you saw anyone on one of these news programs mention Kerry's stance on anything? What passes for the news in this country is awful! And the sheeple just sit there passively soaking it up like it's the gospel. They get the leaders they deserve and if * wins, I hope to God they and their loved ones are the first to get drafted and sent to Iraq to have their brains blown out and limbs blown off. I also hope these idiots lose more jobs and benefits because if they vote for him they deserve it.

20. Maria is full of shit
There is no way Bush is winning in anything close to a 10-12-point landslide. He's running about even with Kerry in the electoral college, and this is his post-RNC peak.

14. "insurgency?'
Stupid Americans. We're the insurgents. The Iraqi's are the indiginous population. And we're surprised that they'll use whatever method they can to get the US (and anyone else) out of their country?

26. You notice how little is mentioned about Iraq now
Except for the lying about the connection with Osama, Republicans don't have much to say in their speeches. Surely Bush would not feel comfortable saying that he would still do it again? I imagine there are very few Iraqis feeling "liberated" these days.
