Bush hails Iraq as model for region
Bush hails Iraq as model for region
By Paul Taylor
September 22, 2004 7:45 AM

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - U.S. President George W. Bush has declared Iraq and Afghanistan to be on the road to democracy and stability and has said they will become models for reshaping the entire Middle East.

In an address on Tuesday to the annual session of the U.N. General Assembly six weeks before the U.S. presidential election, Bush vigorously defended his decisions to invade the two countries and urged the world to do more to support their reconstruction.

"Not long ago, outlaw regimes in Baghdad and Kabul threatened the peace and sponsored terrorists. ... Today the Iraqi and Afghan people are on the path to democracy and freedom," Bush said.

"These two nations will be a model for the broader Middle East," he said, playing down turmoil in both countries as they prepare for elections.

With U.S.-backed interim Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi and Afghan President Hamid Karzai in the hall, Bush vowed the United States would not be blown off course by daily violence or the beheading of hostages.

Model for what

Murder?

War crimes?

Bombing people in their Sleep?

How about systematically looting a country and killing children?

3. TPM had a great quote on this a day or two ago
"As Andrew Sullivan I think suggests in this post, the president and I dare say many of his supporters have little ability to distinguish between resolution, optimism and denial. "

4. LOL! OH, I bet they love that line!
Yes, I'm sure that people in the Middle East will just be lining up to experience the joy of having no electricity and water, getting killed as 'collateral damage' by US bombs and being afraid to go out during the day due to roaming kidnappers.

6. he should have given this speech from "Bush Square" in Baghdad
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2004/9/22/21447/9277

Richard Perle is currently very surprised

"And a year from now, I'll be very surprised if there is not some grand square in Baghdad that is named after President Bush. There is no doubt that, with the exception of a very small number of people close to a vicious regime, the people of Iraq have been liberated and they understand that they've been liberated." - Richard Perle, 9/22/03

I'll refrain from asking Mr. Perle for advice on sports betting, since it appears he struck out on 3 pitches on that prediction.

Although maybe we just don't know where Bush square is. It wouldn't be the first time we didn't have a clue about Iraq.

I guess Condi and Rumfilled are giggling and grinning that Smirky still buys into their "reports"(all going well, freedom reigning) about those two countries.

Pretty funny. He's apparently the only loser on the planet who still thinks things are going well!!!

24. Didn't He
specifically say in response to Kerry's "Bush has no credibility" accusation that he doesn't get his news on Iraq from the New York Times like JOhn Kerry does? He obviously has some secret sources on Iraq that no one else knows about. In fact, it appears he has a different IRAQ that no one appears to know about.

10. Man is denying reality.
The whole goddam world warned him about the consequences of his invasion/occupation folly. We knew the end result would be to destabilize moderation and increase radical fundementalism in the ME.

And he thinks Iraq/Afghanistan should be 'models' for the region? If every ME state was working under these models, we'd be witnessing WW3.

Two US soldiers killed in northern Iraq

BAGHDAD - A US soldier was killed in an attack on a patrol in the northern city of Mosul Wednesday, the US military said, hours after another soldier died in a roadside bomb attack in Tikrit.

"A Task Force Olympia soldier died at approximately 1:00 pm today from injuries following an attack on a Multinational Forces patrol in Mosul," a statement said.

"The attack occurred at approximately 12:00 pm (2000 GMT on Tuesday). The soldier was evacuated to the military hospital in Mosul where the soldier later died of wounds," it added.

Earlier, the military said a soldier was killed in an attack on a patrol in Tikrit at 9:15 am (0515 GMT).

Meanwhile, three US soldiers were wounded when their helicopter was forced to make an emergency landing in southern Iraq, a US military spokeswoman said Wednesday.

The Blackhawk was forced to make an emergency landing late Tuesday at Talil Airbase near the southern city of Nasiriyah immediately after takeoff, she said.

"Initial reports do say the aircraft is severely damaged and the cause is under investigation."

Aren't the daily violence and beheadings symptoms of a horrific problem over there, or am I missing something? If this is the kind of stuff that's getting through the media filters, imagine how much worse the reality is.

38. It's a model all right. It's a model of total failure.
For what happens when a government makes the mistakes of repeating the failed attempts at imperialism in Iraq and other parts of the middle east. Bush's ahistorical strategy is the total failure that all of us who protested the war knew it would be. So, in fact, yes, it's a model for "total failure."
