Sacramento County temporarily bans medical marijuana shops
Sacramento County temporarily bans medical marijuana shops

By Cameron Jahn -- Bee Staff Writer
Published 3:32 pm PDT Tuesday, September 21, 2004

Sacramento County officials on Tuesday agreed to a 30-day ban on medical marijuana shops to give themselves a month to decide how to regulate sales of the drug.

Following the lead of other local governments, the Board of Supervisors agreed to the ban on medicinal cannabis dispensaries in order to devise a plan to keep neighborhoods, store owners and residents safe, officials said.

A new state law allows primary care physicians to administer marijuana to patients with a doctor's prescription, but local governments across the region have found themselves largely unprepared to handle the growing number of requests to open cannabis dispensaries.

1. Montel had a great show today
On medical marijuana. I wonder if this story was what triggered the show. I never realized that his condition is helped by marijuana. It was a really good show.

5. My grown daughter called me
about Montel's show today. She said it was extremely powerful, and had so much information about why marijuana is banned in this country. After seeing the show, she agrees with him 100%, and she isn't taking any kind of pain meds, or anti-nausea meds, which would cause her to be biased.

She and I discussed the whole situation at great length, and she is now very much in favor of medicinal marijuana. She now believes that doctors should prescribe adequate amounts of any pain medicine, such as morphine, if the patient's condition warrants it. While things like morphine, when prescribed by a doctor, isn't illegal, it's fairly common now under Calico Johnny to harass doctors they consider prescribing it too often.

6. As my great grandmother slowly died from terminal cancer
the doctors wouldn't prescribe powerful painkillers like morphine beacuse they were afraid that she would become addicted.

::sigh::

7. I'm sorry to hear about your grandmother
Watching someone you love die slowly, in great pain, has got to be one of the worst experiences you can imagine. The absolute absurdity of being afraid that a dying person will die addicted, has got to be one of the most inhumane decisions ever made.

I don't know how close you were to her, but my own two grandmothers meant everything in the world to me. I benefited from their love, their guidance, and their strength. Thank God neither of them suffered, but to think of one of those wonderful women suffering because of someone else's phony self righteousness, makes me fervently wish that those people somehow are repaid by God, or karma, or the universe. Again, I'm sorry for your loss.

4. Medical MJ user weighs in
I suffered through the closing of Green Cross Medical MJ Co-op in Seattle two years ago.

I use medical marijuana for to help control seizures and pain from Central Pain Syndrome. I had my monthly appointment at Green Cross scheduled the week they shut the co-op down (for a couple months).

It was a painful week until I found an illegal supply. People are hurting in Sacremento right now.
