State poised to host crucial debate

When President Bush and challenger John Kerry meet for their first face-to-face skirmish at a debate in Miami next week, the stakes could not be higher.
For Democratic nominee Kerry, stagnant in the polls, it's his best and perhaps last chance to alter the dynamic of the campaign. For the president, dogged by continuing chaos in Iraq, it's a prime opportunity to clinch the deal with voters who are leery of the war.

THE BIG TIME
As former Republican Party of Florida chairman Al Cárdenas put it: ``This is varsity, not junior varsity.''
This time around, unlike in 1996 when Florida was only emerging as a possible swing state, Florida already is the sweetest plum of the presidential battleground states -- 27 Electoral College votes to which neither side can yet lay claim, despite a barrage of campaign advertising and personal visits from both candidates.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~The Miami Herald seems nearly beside itself with glee.
Bush has been to Miami over 24 times during his stay at the White House, going there to celebrate, mingle with his Cuban-American right-wing "exile" base, to whom he is indebted for so much in the 2000 election.
How he EVER got the debate placed there, in the bosom of his "homies" is simply unfathomable. It's a cheap shot, like Kerry having a debate in his own home town, among his best friends. Shabby, shabby, shabby.
