Kerry's hold on Illinois stays strong
By Kevin McDermott
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
SPRINGFIELD -- Illinoisans continue to view Democratic Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts as better suited to guide the economy, more capable of resolving the Iraq War, and generally more in touch with their problems than President Bush, according to a new poll for The Pantagraph and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Bush continues to score higher on the gut-level question of who can better protect America from another terrorist attack, the poll found. But by virtually every other measure, Illinois respondents said Kerry was the better choice for president.
The poll of 800 likely Illinois voters gives Kerry a decisive 15-point lead over Bush in a state already assumed to be a Kerry stronghold.
According to the poll, support for Kerry in Illinois stands at 54 percent, with Bush at 39 percent and 7 percent undecided. That's a wider margin than some recent polls, but generally in line with the lead that Kerry has almost universally held here.
