Schwarzenegger Jabs at Bustamante, Invokes Reagan
By REUTERS

Filed at 9:12 p.m. ET
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - With polls suggesting that California's recall election had become a two-man race between Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante, the film star took jabs on Monday at his Democratic rival.<snip>

``People just have to understand that when you think of Gray Davis you have to think at the same time of Bustamante,'' Schwarzenegger told San Diego-based radio host Roger Hedgecock on KOGO 600 AM. ``It's like one newspaper pointed out: Bustamante is Gray Davis with a receding hairline and a mustache.''

<snip>``Bustamante and Davis have been overspending, overtaxing, and over-regulating,'' Schwarzenegger, a Republican, said in an interview on a separate radio show with host Hugh Hewitt. ``They spent too much money and they go now and want to tax people to punish them for (politicians') mistakes.''

<snip>``I will give power back to the people,'' he told Hedgecock. ``Remember what Ronald Reagan said: This is America, a shining city on the hill.'' .....``I don't need the president to come out here or anyone else. You can't pull the wool over anyone's eyes. They know what Gray Davis has done and what Cruz Bustamante has done.''

2. Personal attacks right away from Arnold?
I thought the Republicans said they weren't going to "go negative" and that's why Davis wasn't allowed to point out Arnold's negatives.

Does this mean it's ok for Gray Davis to go after Arnold?

I hope Davis sees the opening and takes it.

4. My Thoughts Exactly, Democat! Personal Attacks by Arnold.
Well, so much for his promise of a "positive campaign."

This will only bring out millions of California Latinos to vote against this asshole. Hopefully, we'll pick up some fellows with receding hairlines and moustaches, too.

I am amazed that this jerk would even say such a thing as, "Bustamante is Gray Davis with a receding hairline and a mustache."

What a fool, Arnold truly is.

This will backfire.

In fact, it may just finally be the glue that Bustamante and Davis needed.

NO ON THE RECALL.
YES TO BUSTAMANTE.

24. You know...
I'm surprised no creative hackers have thought of infiltrating Arnold's site and posting his revealing pics and pro-Nazi comments all over the place - along with links to sources so no one can claim the uploaded materials are fake.

Not that I can or would do this (I am not skilled and it's, uh, wrong). Just saying, is all.

8. Typical right-wing intellect. . .
attribute to an intellectual lightweight -- Ronald Reagan -- the greatest statement made by a 17th century icon, Massachusett's Governor John Winthrop, who wrote in 1630 that the denizens of
the Massachusett's Bay Colony must. . .

. . . Consider that wee shall be as a Citty upon a Hill, the eies of all people are uppon us. . .

But then, what more do you expect from another nascent politician who, until now, has made his mark hefting deadweight and speaking other people's words.

9. OK....I've calmed down
Here's why this tactic won't work:

1) It is common knowledge in CA that Bustamante and Davis aren't even cordial...to suggest that they are partners, joined at the hip, in some evil scheme to destroy the state is laughable. A lot has been made of the fact (even before this recall nonsense began) that they've spoken just a few times in the past 3 years...I don't think voters are going to go along with Arnie on this illogic

2) This smells of desperation...Arnie saw the latest polls and decided he had to open up the attack to include Bustamante...he's (or his handlers more likely) are seriously underestimating Bustamante's popularity in the state, especially compared to Davis. While most Californians would not object to knocks on Davis, there's a significant percentage who will not tolerate knocks on Cruz

3) The goodwill that Arnie's enjoyed just ended with this mean-spirited and clumsy attempt to link Bustamante to Davis. By attacking the man's appearance, he's going to look just like your garden variety politician who sinks to this level....kind of like how's he's been portraying Davis!

As we get closer to Oct. 7, the more optimistic I get. This 1-2 punch of Davis (surely the Rasputin of American politics) and Bustamante will knock this pretender on his ass.

14. How is the election of the Lt Gov determined?
Is the Lt Gov elected separately or with the Gov?

If with the Gov who decides or decided the candidate for Lt Gov?

In Indiana, the Gov essentially decides but it is approved at the party convention by the delegates. Then they run on the same ticket together.

23. In CA, Gov & Lt. Gov are elected separately...
There have been many occasions where the governor and lieutenant governor have been from different parties (the last occasion was
Pete Wilson's 2nd term from 1995-1999 where Davis, a Dem, was Lt. Gov for Wilson, a Republican)

As far as what will happen if Davis is recalled and Bustamante is elected, I don't really know. I'm sure the question's been tossed around somewhere on DU

22. This is the same tactic that they used against Gore
The right wing and the media (am I being redundant?) smeared Gore with the perceived sins of Clinton and called Gore's honesty and integrity into question because he was associated with Clinton. The proof they used were the bullshit fabrications they came up with during the election (e.g. Gore said he was the creator of the internet, etc.)

Unfortunately, it worked pretty well last time, but this is California. ;>)

31. Some good news on local polls
In Bakersfield, the heart of the conservative interior valley, a call-in telephone poll was conducted last night.

1,200 people called in to the poll. 48% wanted Arnold, 44% wanted Bustamonte.

If Bustamonte can garner 44% of the vote in the most conservative part of California, there is no doubt that he will run away with the election.

15. On our local (Sacramento) Clear Channel sewer
Wingnut talker Mark Williams was going after Bustamante in typical junior-high moron fashion. While he played a speech Bustamante had made in Spanish, he shouted over it stuff like "Hey, this is America, speak English, I can't understand you ..." etc. etc.

In the immortal words of Keith Moon, "That'll go over like a lead zeppelin."

How do you say "massive backfire" en Español?

Jill is another one of those Ann KKKolter wannabees. Jill lives in the same lasseiz-fairyland as everyone else in the LA Media, they have totally deluded themselves into believing that the GOP can do no wrong and the source of all evil resides behind Bill Clinton's zipper.

I really believe the public is going to turn on the media, especially all the Presstitutes in LA who keep blowing Arnold 24/7. Nothing will give me more pleasure than to see these whores crying when Davis beats the Recall and Bustamante beats Ah nold!

20. "I will give power back to the people..."
I wonder what people Arnold had in mind when he said that. Ken Lay perhaps?

As to his cheap shot to Bustamante, the truth is that Bustamante has been ignored by Davis since day one. Bustamante is not responsible for Davis's own blunders as governor and, unlike Davis or Arnold, Bustamante does have a "Tough Love" plan to put California's financial house in order.

28. It is so painfully obvious
that Ahnold hasn't a clue about California or it's residents.

1) There is no love lost between Davis and Bustamonte. They've had almost no contact with each other in the last several years. Most Californians are aware of that (except Ahnold, of course) so connecting the two isn't going to work.

2) Most Californians are aware of how we got into this financial mess -- it's called Bush, Enron and the MANUFACTURED energy "crisis."

3) His shots against Bustamonte will backfire big time with Latinos, who, by the way, are registering to vote in record numbers -- mainly because Bustamonte is on the ticket.

Remember, California Democrats have TWO chances to hang on to the governorship -- Parts 1 and 2 on the ballot. The Repukes have to climb two hurdles in order to usurp the 2002 election. There are a LOT of pissed off people in this state who are completely disgusted with what this small band of fanatics are trying to do and Florida references are constant here. The ONLY way we can redeem ourselves from being the laughing stock of the world (and almost certain ruin) is to keep the governorship in Democrat hands.

You're going DOWN Ahnold!

NO on the Recall
YES on Bustamonte.
