Nigerian political crisis
Nigeria's ruling party on Friday is attempting to rectify a political crisis that broke out in the southeastern Nigerian state of Anambra when the state's governor was removed from office in what may have been an elaborate coup attempt.

The crisis erupted on Thursday when Anambra state governor, Chris Ngige, purportedly sent a letter to the speaker of the state parliament tendering his resignation and requesting the appointment of the deputy governor in his stead.

Shortly after the directive was carried out, Ngige - who denied writing any such letter - was arrested by police. A top state police official claimed the governor was merely put under "protective custody".

Jerry Gana, special adviser on political affairs to Nigeria's President Olusegun Obasanjo, said the incident was "a rape of democracy and we shall not allow it to stand".

Ngige claims the crisis is the handiwork of a wealthy businessman who contributed millions of dollars to the governor's campaign fund. As soon as Ngige won election, the unnamed mogul presented the new governor with a bill of $15m.

1. Anambra governor abducted
An unidentified team of uniformed personnel alleged to be mobile policemen yesterday abducted and whisked away the Anambra State governor, Dr. Chris Ngige, to an unknown destination.

The team, alleged to have been led by an Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), wearing the name tag of Raphael Ige, was said to have forced its way into the governor’s office in Awka, the state capital at about 10 a.m. yesterday.

The chief press secretary to the governor, Mr. Chuks Akunna, who confirmed the incident to Daily Trust in a telephone conversation yesterday, disclosed that the deputy-governor, Mr. Okey Udeh, has already taken over the affairs of the state as acting governor.

The governor’s spokesman who said he narrowly escaped being abducted, disclosed that the crack team arrived the Government House, Awka, at about 10 a.m. and disarmed all security details attached to Dr. Ngige.

"After that, they held Dr. Ngige hostage for more than three hours after which they took him away," Mr. Akunna further said.

He said the governor was abducted in a green 406 Peugeot salon car without any registration number escorted by a Mazda pick-up van with more than 20 mobile policemen in it.

URL Keeper on. Must look by title.

I was thinking. When scum suck Russert asks Dean stupid questions, why doesn't Dean or other Dems. respond with asking the reporter questions about subjects like the above; or Afghanistan drugs... Make the reporters look like fools for not knowing what's going on in the world. Make the reporters look like fools for not reporting on such important events. Why are the Dems always on defense? Hit back you spineless wimps!

2. rape of democracy
The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Tafa Balogun, yesterday in his reaction to the constitutional crisis in Anambra State faulted the alleged removal of the governor, Dr. Chris Ngige, describing the move as "unconstitutional."
Also, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on whose platform Ngige, his deputy, Dr. Okey Udeh and majority of the members of the State House of Assembly were elected also yesterday dissociated itself from the governor's alleged removal. The party said it was a "rape of democracy."

3. Homes bulldozed to clear way for Bush

Homes bulldozed to clear way for Bush

ABUJA - Armed police backed by bulldozers tore down illegally built homes and shops in the Nigerian capital Abuja today ahead of a visit by US President George W Bush.
The operation began yesterday after an order from President Olusegun Obasanjo to clean up the city ahead of his American counterpart's arrival, officials said.

In one residential quarter of the city reporter saw around 60 buildings - ranging from brick-built structures to makeshift wooden shanties - ploughed down as hundreds of residents looked on in despair.

"They didn't give us any warning," wailed tailor John Emeka, who saved his sewing machine but lost much of his stock when a joint taskforce of police and environmental protection agents pulled down his business.

Nearby a stock of computers lay mangled in the wreckage of an electronic goods store, and the ownwer of a grilled meat stand argued with officers attempting to condemn his barbecue.

The police came armed with assault rifles and tear gas, but there was no violence as the bulldozers rolled in.

A senior local official, Babangida Aliyu, told reporters that Obasanjo had personally ordered the destruction on a visit last week to the Federal Capital Territory's lawmakers.

"Obasanjo gave specific instructions when he visited, and we have no qualms in carrying them out," he said.

More than 2,000 Nigerian police and intelligence officers have been deployed around Abuja to provide security for Bush's visit, the last stage in a whirlwind five-nation tour of Africa.

The US leader is due in Abuja late today after a stopover in Uganda and is to return to Washington on Saturday.

His trip has so far taken him to Senegal, South Africa and Botswana.

4. How Policemen Stormed Awka Government House
Members of the police contingent which stormed Anambra State Government House, Awka, yesterday morning might have operated without any directive from the appropriate authorities.
THISDAY checks revealed that about 10am, the policemen numbering about 50 had arrived the Government House without the knowledge of the state police commissioner and immediately disarmed members of Governor Chris Ngige's security team.
The men who claimed they were acting on the orders of the AIG in charge of Zone 9, Mr. Raphael Ige also disconnected the telecommunication facilities in the Government House.
