TWO Canadian members of a German ice hockey team were in police custody today after being questioned on suspicion of raping a Swedish woman, a lawyer for one of the players said.
Lawyer Lars Engstrand said a Swedish prosecutor would decide by tomorrow whether to ask a court to keep the men - one, a former NHL player - in custody or release them.
Engstrand said his client maintained his innocence and was "shocked, sad and upset."
Neither the club nor police would release the men's names.
The players from the Eisbaren Berlin club met a 20-year-old woman outside a hamburger stand on Saturday in Tyringe, 630 kilometres southwest of Stockholm.
The woman voluntarily accompanied the players to their hotel, where the alleged rape took place, a police spokesman said yesterday.
