Feds Issue Terror Warning For Bay Area Oil Refineries

POSTED: 10:57 p.m. PDT August 22, 2003
UPDATED: 4:15 p.m. PDT August 23, 2003

SAN FRANCISCO -- A 'single source' in Europe has told U.S. officials that there may be a terrorist attack this weekend at a waterfront oil facility in either San Francisco, New York City or Los Angeles.

While the tip has not been corroborated by another source, the FBI is taking the threat seriously and has issued a terror alert to Bay Area authorities. An additional target, the source told federal officials, may be the Boulder Dam.

The California Highway Patrol told KTVU that it had not added any additional officers to its patrols, but was keeping a close eye on the local bridges, chemical plants and oil refineries.

The Richmond Fire Department did confirm that it was stepping up its patrols of the Chevron Refinery, but a spokeswoman at the Contra Costa Fire Department -- which has the Tosco Refinery complex within its jurisdiction -- said she had not been told about the alert.

2. Heads up
W is planning on being in Jacksonville, FL on Sept. 9th. Of course, Jeb will be by his side.

My guess, W will try to celebrate 9-11 with another trifecta. Just for old time's sake.

3. Would make sense from a strategic standpoint
Iraq oil flow is way down, oil prices up....disrupt more capacity and gasoline prices go through the roof....the biggest achilles heel of whining americans who love to tool around in their gas hogs with gasoline prices subsidized by the blood of their young.

5. Ok, lets say it does happen
Will he be able to point to his great plan of homeland security? If the terror level is raised, lately he is only getting credit for scaring people and spending state money. Neither of those look good for him. This chips away at the strongest elect thing he has.

What I think will happen will be another sting of a RPG seller. Nobody got hurt because of his great homeland security, tough on terroism stance. States were not financially burdened because of his great wisdom to see that this extra cost was not needed etc. That is what I think will happen and why.

7. Kick, because the media mostly ignored this
Is this a sign of change?

Just a couple of months ago, this would have been on CNN at the top of every hour, complete with "scene-setting" shots of the Golden Gate Bridge.

But now, a supposedly "major" terror alert has gone virtually unacknowledged by the media whores.

8. Also, photo op for Arnold.
complete with a nice little (Rovian) speech about how Gray Davis caused the refineries to be unsafe through budget mismanagement.

11. Arnold will be there as terrorists are striking...
And he'll blow them all away with a big gun. Except for one, who he will take down with his bare hands. And there will be about a zillion TV newspeople covering it live, I mean with satellite trucks and everything, and when the main gasoline tower explodes, we'll all know why our gas will soon be costing ten dollars a gallon, and why we had to evict all those penguins and scientists from antarctica, because we NEED that oil there.

Go Arnold, go Arnold!

I am so glad we attacked Iraq, everything is so much better now. You know, the economy, consumer confidence, personal bankruptcies, the deficit, body bags with our boys comming home in them, higher gas prices than in the last 5 years. It's just a great thing! Hallaluya Sweet Jesus!!!!

IMPEACH BUSH NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!

10. Tosco refinery doesn't need much help
Every couple of months or so, that refinery belches out a toxic plume and Richmond residents have to "shelter in place".
It's a ridiculous location for a refinery - in a densely populated area, just up the road from my home.
