Cleland energizes Democrats
Cleland energizes Democrats
Former senator praises Kerry, knocks Bush's record

Friday, September 3, 2004

BY DAVE GERSHMAN

News Staff Reporter

Max Cleland entered the union hall in Ann Arbor Thursday night more like a rock star than a former senator from Georgia.

A crowd that filled every seat and stood shoulder-to-shoulder cheered his arrival and then listened intently as he spoke. Afterward, he was surrounded by well-wishers seeking his photograph.

Cleland, it appears, has earned every bit of his celebrity among Democrats. He didn't disappoint the faithful Thursday night.

At the same time Republicans celebrated President George Bush at their convention in New York and continued to attack Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry, Cleland was lifting the spirits of local Democratic activists, who are expected to take the campaign to the streets in earnest. In a 20-minute speech, Cleland burnished Kerry's claim to the presidency while knocking Bush's record - often to laughs from the audience.

1. Not "like a rock star"
Cleland is BETTER than a rock star. He's a genuine hero.

Go Max, go!

2. He's been one of the best of Kerry's surrogates
I think they should feature him in a tv ad speaking directly to the camera about Kerry and why he is better than Bush on military/veteran issues.

5. Quite unlike the dilettantish fools who advised no response as Kerry's core
character was assaulted with venomous falsehoods. Let's see and hear more from Max.

6. Max should be used by Kerry to the Max.
If people don't believe Max knows a hero and a deserter when he sees them, then they are just lost.

10. strange that Republicans call themselves lucky for having Zell speak..
if Zell had been a Vietnam veteren, Republicans wouldn't of hestitated to destroy him by twisting his war record. But Zell always looks out fur number one.

Zell semper fidelis sibi est

12. Has anyone seen this photo of Max Cleland I just found in google?
Look at that good-hearted, honest, totally open face.

Is there any plan to get him back his job in the Senate? I would think Republicans should hang their nasty, ugly heads in shame for what they did to dishonor this fine man. They won't of course. It's not within their ability range. They are filth.

Max Cleland was exactly as fine as you'd expect him to be when he delivered the message to Texas. That act was far more difficult for him than it would be for someone who had not been shot to smithereens. He's generous of spirit, big hearted, and strong.

I would dispise ANYONE who would dare show up here trying to mock him as a perverted pleasure meant to hack off sincere DU'ers. They only point themselves out as @$$####$.
