NEW YORK (AP)Republicans are satisfying their convention delegates with an angry vision of the presidential race and attacks on Democratic nominee John Kerry, but it won't play well with voters in the closing weeks of the campaign, Democrats said Thursday.
"Are Americans going to react to a message of fear or respond to a message of hope?" said Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack, who joined Democratic Chairman Terry McAuliffe and a half-dozen Democratic mayors in the closing session of the party's rapid response effort.
"Delegates love this kind of stuff, but when this settles down and we get past Labor Day, I think this convention will prove to be a big mistake," said Philadelphia Mayor John Street. "People out in the country's neighborhoods want to know what you have to offer us." ..
"We're protecting Baghdad, but we can't protect people in our own housing projects," said Trenton, N.J. Mayor Douglas Palmer. ..
