Bush Pushes Aside Talk of Agenda, Sees Talk of National Security as Ticket to Second Term

In delivering its message this week, the GOP elephant so far has been something of a one-trick pony.
On Monday, the prime-time speakers at the Republican National Convention spoke about terrorism.
On Tuesday, when the official theme was compassion, the featured speakers discussed terrorism.
And on Wednesday, when the theme was economic opportunity, the talk was again about terrorism.

It is no accident that each prime-time speech this week has turned to terrorism regardless of the ostensible theme. With the situation in Iraq still unstable, and with the economy showing signs of a summer swoon, the president appears to be calculating that the surest route to reelection is keeping the focus on national security.
This week's Washington Post-ABC News poll shows that a majority of Americans disapprove of President Bush's handling of the economy and the war in Iraq, but that 60 percent of the country continues to give him high marks in the struggle against terrorism. By 56 percent to 38 percent, Americans trust Bush more than Kerry to fight terrorism -- Bush's strongest issue in the poll.
