Berg’s father plans to protest at convention
As hundreds of thousands of protesters converge on New York City this weekend for the Republican National Convention, a well-known local name will be among them. Michael Berg of West Whiteland, Chester County, will join demonstrators protesting the war in Iraq and President Bush’s agenda.

Berg, a longtime peace activist, has attracted more attention for his anti-war views since his 26-year-old son, Nicholas, was kidnapped and beheaded by insurgents in Iraq this spring.

"I’m going to protest the Bush administration. I don’t want Bush to win," he said. "I think more people are going to die if Bush wins than if he loses."

(snip)

Berg, who journeyed to New York on his own, later plans to join other protesters from the international coalition, Act Now to Stop War and End Racism, or ANSWER.

"I think probably there are more people fed up with the war now than there were three months ago," he said. "I don’t know that I have that much to do with that."

On a hot and humid day, the march kicked off near noon, under a banner that read, "We say no to the Bush Agenda'' and many other signs against the Iraq war.

"My son has been a victim of this war,'' said Michael Berg, the father of businessman Nick Berg, who was beheaded by terrorists in Iraq.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson and "Fahrenheit 9/11" director Michael Moore, whose movie savages the president, led the 13-block-long river of people.
