Bush Knew Iraq Info Was False
WASHINGTON, July 10, 2003

CIA officials warned members of the President’s National Security Council Staff the intelligence was not good enough to make the flat statement Iraq tried to buy uranium from Africa.

(CBS) Senior administration officials tell CBS News the President’s mistaken claim that Iraq tried to buy uranium from Africa was included in his State of the Union address -- despite objections from the CIA.

Before the speech was delivered, the portions dealing with Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction were checked with the CIA for accuracy, reports CBS News National Security Correspondent David Martin.

32. Why isn't the headline"WH demands investigation Re: false info"?
Wouldn't you expect that Chimp and his Chumps would be expressing outrage and betrayal by their intelligence if they were so misled? Their lack of demand to find the root of the problem speaks louder than all of their lame excuse-making.

When the lead story at CBS News begins with "Bush Knew," contains "Iraq Info" and ends with "False," then yes, the media smell blood.

Things are about to get REALLY interesting!

34. Washington Week in Review is discussing it.
Martha Radditch (spelling?) read the same passage that I think is an indictment: about how the standard for inclusion in the SOTU should not be that a statement is merely factually correct.

Condi's response contradicts this. The name of the "official" in this report HAS to come forward. She is flat out denying that this happened. NSA vs unnamed source won't be a top story for long.

14. How weasely can you get?
As long as the statement was attributed to British Intelligence, the White House officials argued, it would be factually accurate. The CIA officials dropped their objections and that’s how it was delivered.

But that still means they put in information they KNEW was false. It doesn't matter what the Brits thought about it, OUR boys said it was false. The press better not let the weasel out of this one.

15. No honest mistake
Today at a press conference during the President’s trip to Africa, Secretary of State Colin Powell portrayed it as an honest mistake.

No honest mistake, lackey-boy. You knew it was "dubious" at best, and found a weasley way to stick it in anyway. That was intentionally deceptive, by anyone's measure. Anyone except Smirk and the neocons.

18. Lying piece of ..
C. Rice indicates that the CIA had no objection to "the British claim" not the uranium request itself. So what they have now spun is that they never claimed that Iraq wanted to buy uranium, only that the British said so.

Of course, on March 3, Cheney speaks directly about Iraq's nuclear capabilities on "Meet the Press." Sorry, Condi too many smart people on the internet. You lose.

What a liar. These people spun us into a war, killed thousands, and wasted our country's financial resources. And she might be governor of California..give me a break.

This whole group belongs in jail.

33. Powell: BULLSHIT!
Edited on Fri Jul-11-03 07:10 PM by Sick of Bullshit
WASHINGTON (AFP) - US Secretary of State Colin Powell was under persistent pressure from the Pentagon and White House to include questionable intelligence in his report on Iraq's weapons of mass destruction he delivered at the United Nations last February, a US weekly reported.

US News and World Report magazine said the first draft of the speech was prepared for Powell by Vice President Richard Cheney's chief of staff, Lewis "Scooter" Libby, in late January.

According to the report, the draft contained such questionable material that Powell lost his temper, throwing several pages in the air and declaring, "I'm not reading this. This is bullshit."

Is it worth all this just to keep your son on at the FCC, Colin?

19. NYTIMES lies about the lies...
CIA approved Iraqi uranium claim goes the headline...

dig a little deeper into the article and you get...

Bush, asked during a meeting with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni here how erroneous material had ended up in the address, said, "I gave a speech to the nation that was cleared by the intelligence services." He did not answer when pressed again on how it wound up in his speech.

But he reiterated his belief that he made the right decision in invading Iraq and asserted that the world is a more peaceful place for it.

Rice said "the CIA cleared the speech in its entirety."

The agency raised only one objection to the sentence involving an allegation that Iraq was trying to obtain "yellow cake" uranium, she said. Yellow cake is a slightly processed form of uranium ore the color and consistency of yellow corn meal.

"Some specifics about amount and place were taken out," Rice added.

"With the changes in that sentence, the speech was cleared," she said. "The agency did not say they wanted that sentence (on uranium) out."

Obvously the CIA wasn't clearing the speech for veracity, but for whether or not classified information was in the speech.

Think about that.

20. It's hitting..
It’s great seeing the shit hit the fan, and if it weren’t so sad and embarrassing for our great country I would be laughing my ass off. (Well, I am anyway). I’m glad I decided to sit back and watch it hit instead of getting pissed off all the time. I guess I kind of knew it would eventually. I just hope the brainwashed public takes notice of all of this. But, it seems by just talking to some people I know here at work...they are turning blind eyes.
Why do I keep envisioning that tune of “The baby elephant walk” as our new national anthem?

22. Dick Durbin is on
the floor of the Senate talking about the CBS report. Condi Rice blaming it on CIA. George Tenent saying he knew nothing about it. ... what White House official decided to distort the information given to the president. ... But someone knew the information was inaccurate and put it in there anyway.

Senator Durbin said he put an amendment in the legislation passed yesterday that the Inspector General of the State Department conduct an investigation immediately to find out who put that information in the SOU. That person should be held accountable and dismissed.

It is incumbant on us in Congress and in the press to find out who is responsible for this misleading statement to the president. But someone, someone made this decision. ... People have to be held accountable and that should be done immediately. Dismiss them from the Federal Government. I yield the floor.

25. ABC was saying this morning...
is that the rationale for going with the British dossier stating the uranium transacton is this. They have the report stating Iraq was seeking uranium from Niger. They will go ahead with the war. If it is found that the dossier was bogus they can pin it on the British and they would come out of it fairly clean. Sorry about their luck.

28. Listen to the whore, Powell!
“There was no effort or attempt on the part of the president or anyone else in the administration to mislead or to deceive the American people,” said Powell.

But eight days after the State of the Union, when Powell addressed the U.N., he deliberately left out any reference to Iraqi attempts to buy uranium from Africa.

“I didn’t use the uranium at that point because I didn’t think that was sufficiently strong as evidence to present before the world,” Powell said.

Unbelievable. What a freaking bum!
