Nazi resort up for sale
Times snip
By A Correspondent

THE German Government is to auction part of a 10,000-room hotel complex built by the Nazis as a resort for soldiers and workers.
Hitler commissioned the holiday camp at Prora on the Baltic island of Rügen as part of the Nazis’ Kraft durch Freude (Strength Through Joy) programme. But the beginning of the Second World War meant the building was never opened as a hotel. The eight concrete blocks were used first as a shelter for refugees and then as a barracks. The sale, on September 23, will be handled by the auction house Norddeutsche Grundstücksauktionen AG.Germany has been trying unsuccessfully to sell the resort for more than a decade.

8. Power through joy - vacation in the third empire?
Holiday camp for the BFEE?

Inside the holiday camp Hitler built

Prora was built by the German Labour Front, Hitler's Keynesian answer to mass unemployment, to provide rejuvenating package holidays for the German working class. The site included a cinema, a school and a hospital, plus a huge jetty that still juts out into the sea, where Strength Through Joy cruise ships would dock, en route to the Canaries. Each double bedroom had central heating, en suite wash basins and, above all, a wonderful sea view. Billy Butlin, eat your heart out.

After the war, Rügen ended up in the Russian sector and Prora became a top-secret army base, a virtual university of warfare, where Warsaw Pact troops rehearsed for a Third World War. The holiday camp that Hitler built became a hi-tech military training camp, where Soviet soldiers played wargames to prepare for the apocalypse to come. Out of bounds to locals, Prora disap peared from East German maps. A wild wood grew up around it, hiding it from the sea. Today, Prora's camouflage is complete. You can stroll for miles along the beach, only a few hundred feet away, and never know it's there.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the soldiers left and Prora became an awkward historical curio, an uncomfortable reminder of a century most Germans would rather forget. A plan to turn it into a hotel came to nothing, and I'm sure I wasn't the first foreigner to wonder why the Bundesrepublik didn't demolish it. But I'm glad they didn't and believe it would be a great shame if they ever do.

First, it's actually rather fascistic to obliterate every architectural trace of a previous, vanquished regime. The Third Reich was an historical era. Uniquely awful, but unique none the less. Prora is the largest remaining monument to the worst of times, the flip- side of the Final Solution. Tragically, for the majority of Germans, Rügen was more real than the concentration camps. Without Prora, it's impossible to understand how Auschwitz happened.

9. ShrubRaLa - Suggested new name for the resort
As per Shangrila.

ShrubRaLa could honor the memory of Grandpappy Prescott "Skull and Boner" Bush, who did so much to financially support Hitler and the Nazis.

I think ShrubRaLa has VAST potential as a theme park.

11. You laugh and you scoff at the place's Nazi past...
...but what of its potential for stuff like this?

http://www.oneworldcamp.de/prora/english/e04_umwsch.html

The non-profit and non-government organizations One World Camp Prora e. V. and Naturwissenschaftler/Innen-Initiative arrange the Summer-Institute with the topic "Sustainable Development in EU and EU Eastern Enlargement Regions" from August 22nd to 24th, 2003 in Prora/Baltic Island of Rügen for students and young people from the EU and the future EU countries.

The lectures will be combined with study groups which will be supervised by experts. The topics focus on agriculture management, alternatives in water management and renewable energy. The working results of the study groups will be presented and published together with the lectures. List of lectures will be presented soon.

There's a train station right in the "town"; Berlin is four hours away.

Sure, we'd have to sage it, or whatever Europeans do to purify stuff, but hey, are you gonna stop driving your classic VW Bug because there are rumors that Hitler designed it? That's what I thought.

Now all we need is to get a big fat lefty investor on board, quick; George Soros is a bit preoccupied with the elections...

13. Not if we can get hold of it first!
Rather than making it into Abu Ghraib North, let's us progressives get hold of it and transmute it into a peace think tank, sort of like Dennis Kucinich's "Department of Peace" on a global scale.

And fugly as hell - I've been there.
It has a mixed post-war history. It served as (East German Army Base) ; today it is a youth hostel, most of it is still in ruins.
